I cant keep it down....should not be sung by a woman.

I had a guy in front of me at an audition sing Take me or leave me. It was very interesting :)

I don't really care so long as the song is performed well. Be it straight, or a send up. Chita I agree, MB's version of Broadway Baby from Hey Mr. Producer, I believe, is a stitch. He is doing it on the concert tour of the UK right now, I think, and the audience loves it.

"A man singing Losing My Mind or Send in the Clowns has always left me a bit cold."

LOL BobbyB...Michael Ball sings both of these.

Love your avatar, VonTussleGirl! Nice seeing that cute face here!

I think "Send In The Clowns" could be very effective sung by a man, quite suave. I could imagine Danny Davis doing it. I have, as a matter of fact (imagined it.)

I don't think a woman can sing "The Unreachable Star" from "Man of La Mancha". It needs the timbre of a man's voice

Not to threadjack, but, Aigoo, gay people don't CHOOSE who they are attracted to anymore than you don't choose who you like.

And, I may just have to add "Forget About the BOY" to my upcoming one MAN show! re: Songs That Should Be Sung Only Be A Man or Woman But Not Both

I enjoy being a girl

Norbert Leo Butz quotes about John Lithgow: "He's really clumsy. One of the joys in life is to watch a great big huge man totally wipe out backstage. It takes John about three minutes to hit the floor. It's like watching a Great Sequoia falling gracelessly."

On My Own - Even when Michael Crawford sang this with altered gender in the pronouns, it was still very odd.

I think Music of the Night should be kept to the male sex. As lovely as Barbra Streisand's voice is, it just did not work.

On the opposite note Linda Eder's Anthem blew me away.

Anyone saying a guy should never sing "Defying Gravity" or "And I'm Telling You" never heard Marty Thomas belt it out like it was nothing, LOL. Andyf will agree.

In my opinion, there's a wide varity of songs that could pass as unisex if arranged properly to demonstrate a lil bit of originality, without sounding completely weird, but there's some that just don't cut it.

I don't WANT to live in what they call "a certain way." In the first place I'd be no good at it and besides that I don't want to be identified with any one class of people. I want to live every whichway, among all kinds---and know them---and understand them---and love them---THAT's what I want! - Philip Barry (Holiday)

But pronouns schmonouns, there IS bisexuality/homosexuality to suggest leaving pronouns as is. You could also change the intention to befit a friend or relative. I just DO NOT believe in thinking so limited.

I'm a very open-minded person, jrb. You may just be more open to the gender-transitions and the awkward pronouns that are sung in songs. There's nothing really wrong with it, but to some, it sounds like it should not be done. The songs in question are just so attached to the character's gender that it's unusual when done by the opposite gender.

Unless it requires drastic alterations I don't think it matters if I man or woman sings a certain song I heard MB sing Broadway Baby last week and it was amazing as he said in his introduction the song is about what makes a performer want to be up on stage and the lengths they'll go to get there.

Michael has sung alot of songs originally sung by women but most have very little lyric change in them Don't rain on my parade,I dreamed a dream, send in the clouds, show me,As if we never said goodbye even My heart will go are all songs he has sung in the past but the emotions the songs are relating to are not exclusively female feelings.Men have these emotions to so that makes the songs appropriate.Just as Love Changes everything was sung by a man in aspects but it could have been easily given to Rose or Jenny characters to sing.So the song works for both sexes.

the only thing that comes to mind is a guy singing "defying gravity". Most girls couldn't even do that song justice so I don't think any guy should attempt to sing it.
