I'm trying to make a list of Broadway songs that could be sung during a session of psychoanalysis. Confessional songs that deal with the character's inner thoughts and problems. I know that almost every solo ever written fits in this category, but I'm trying to find songs that really feel like they could be sung to a psychologist, songs that make clear that the character has serious problems to deal with. Do you guys have any suggestions?
Oh, sherie_worshipper, this is brilliant! I'll look through the songs and see what I can find. Thanks for starting something very compelling!
The easiest one that just came to me is "I Talk to the Trees." This is an easy diagnosis and could be problematic :)
Oh, another one: "Doatsy Mae" would be sung to a therapist, and needing some validation. Her diagnosis could manifest as dysthymia, or maybe this is sung to her husband in couple's counseling?

"You Don't Know (reprise)" from Next to Normal is actually sung to a psychotherapist in the show.

Pity the Child-- Chess
As long as he needs me-- Oliver (A friend once told me how this song made her think of spousal abuse and I have never heard it the same way since)
Confrontation from J/H
You should become familiar with LADY IN THE DARK.
Pleasant Little Kingdom from Follies would be another one, either for individual or couples counseling.
Where Do I Go? from Hair, and
Where Am I Going? from Sweet Charity
have similar themes of searching for something
More than just malice should become familiar with the "edit your message" button.
Holy triple posts!
Aldonza from MOLM
Losing My Mind from Follies.

About half the score of FALSETTOS.
I was thinking the entire score of "Next to Normal", but my cat could have said the same thing.
What about "Miss Marmelstein?" There could be some interesting staging.

I agree that almost all of William Finn's scores could be sung to or with a psychologist, especially the beautiful "Elegies."
These are all amazing suggestions! Thank you very much!
Now I'm looking for songs that could be sung in group therapy! It's relatively easy to find solos, now I'm having a hard time looking for ensemble numbers! Any help will be appreciated!

Group therapy - How about "Life Support" and "Will I?" from "Rent"?
What about the duet "In His Eyes" from Jekyll & HYDE? or "Facade"? Perhaps even "I Still Believe" (Miss Saigon) and "I Know Him So Well" could also fit the bill, as they fit in the female duet that's not sung as a duet but as two songs.
More Solos: "No One Knows Who I Am" (J&H), "When I Look At You" (The Scarlet Pimpernel),
"Big Ass Rock" from The Full Monty would be a fun group therapy song.
"Everything That I Am"-Tarzan
Is this my past here before me
Is this my story unfolding?
It's all here to discover
Everything that I am
Can this be what I've been seeking?
All my life I've been waiting for this
And now these memories
Will they make me see more?
Ooh I want to know where I belong
I want to know where I came from
I want to know the reason why I'm here
The way I am
Feeling the things I feel
Is this my family?
Can it really be them that I see?
My father and mother
And in their arms can it really be me
All these emotions
I can barely control
Cause the family I had
Is not the family I know?
Ooh and I got to know where I belong
I got to know where I came from
I got to know the reason why I'm here
The way I am
Feeling the things I feel
These spirits calling me
Familiar voices haunting
Disappearing taunting me
This is the choice I must make
Cause I know where I belong
I know where I, I came from
I know the reason why
I must decide
And leave here
The man I am inside
The future is clear for me to see
To be the man I'm meant to be
Like my father with my head up high
Standing tall
And proud of all
That I am
I'm a man!
"Lot's Wife"- Caroline or Change
Aint never been no good,
findin joy the way you should,
hopin water turn to wine -
hope's fine
hope's fine
hope's fine -
til it turn to mud.
And some folks goes to school at nights,
some folks march for civil rights.
I don't.
I ain't got the heart,
I can't hardly read.
Some folks do all kinds of things and
black folks someday live like kings
and someday sunshine shine all day
oh sure it true
it be that way
but not for me
This also true:
ya'll can't do what I can do
ya'll strong but you ain't strong like me:
I HEAR BELLS
YOU CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON ME
I CAINT SAY NO
WHEN IM NOT NEAR THE GIRL I LOVE
NOBODY DOES IT LIKE ME
MR CELLOPHANE
EVERYBODY'S GIRL
