Does anyone know if Idina has any scheduled time off for the Jewish Holidays? If so, is Eden still her understudy? I would love to be able to see Eden do the role but I know it's very close to the opening of her show.

NO, Eden is not her cover anymore. Shoshana Bean has taken oevr for Eden. Shoshana is ah-may-zing. Check out her website www.shoshanabean.com.

Listen to Ain't No Way and just think what she'll be doing on Defying Gravity and No Good Deed!

But, I think Shoshana's a Jew, too, but...how good of a Jew is now the question. =) Updated On: 9/2/04 at 01:08 PM

I believe Eden left (or is leaving) and Shoshana Bean is replacing her as Elphaba's stand-by. Not sure about the Jewish holidays question though, sorry.

Thanks. I've had the experience of having an understudy for a Jewish actor during the Jewish holidays and was just curious. Sorry I missed Eden in the role but I do have my tickets for Brooklyn. She was amazing in Bryant Park.

Rosh Hashonna can be a bit negotiable (only one day & during the day for services) BUT Kol Nidre & Yom Kippur are pretty un negotiable esp cos of the fasting. ( got scr*wed once by having to do a night shift on Kol Nidre & needed to sleep on Yom Kippur I could have greived it as religious descrimination but there were "issues")

hey guys, don't mean to be a bitch, but just a couple of quick facts:

Rosh Hashanah is how it's spelled. (It's the Jewish new year-literally "Head of the Year")

And Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonment) comprise the Jewish High Holy Days, not holidays...

Just some cultural enlightenment....

Wow. Tough question. Eden's got a great voice, and so does Shoshana. Eden's is more traditional musical theatre than Shoshana's...although Shoshana can sing in almost different voice depending on what she's singing, so I don't know. I'd say they are just different.

Wait, Idina is Jewish?

Sorry for the mis-spellings and was just posting the way I speak. My family always uses the term: Jewish Holidays. I understand the significance of the High Holy Days but we never use that expression when saying "Daddy is leaving for Florida right after the Jewish Holidays" or "Daddy is coming home from Florida right before the Holiday" (Passover for those gentiles out there).

Am I alone? Are we bad Jews? Or, is this the just the Americanization of Jewish culture or expressions. I'm sure someone out there will set me straight.

By the way, the real question was if Eden would be in as the understudy that night. This was not a spelling contest nor was it meant to be an exercise in Judaism. Just a simple question.

I didn't mean to imply that anyone was a 'bad Jew' I was simply pointing out the 'holidays' difference, because often holiday is quickly associated with rest and relaxation and vacation, which is definitly not what Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are about.

I'm a bad Jew. Mom works for Jews for Jesus...I think as her spawn, I am a bad Jew. We also only celebrate Passover...nothing else. Bad Jew. Bad Jew.

Anybody named Shoshana is either Jewish or has really weird parents. I'm going to go with the Jewish explanation.

And I know I wouldn't want to be on stage on Yom Kippur if I were observing it. Or doing anything, really, except going to synagogue or whining about how hungry I am. :)

I am reminded of the famous story about the late Ann Miller. During the run of SUGAR BABIES, one of her fellow performers asked her, "Are you going to take time off for Passover"? - to which Miss Miller responded, "Honey, I don't do game shows!"

My rabbi emeritus usta say holiday- as well as Holy Day ( or Days of Awe as presently in use @ my schul) he said he wanted to help remove the sense the Yom Ha Kippur was some sour day of mourning -a conotation all too freq. (ie Yizgor) so I accept both as valid.

PS. It's an English adaptation of a Hebrew word -- a language that uses symbols... technically there is no correct English spelling... just FYI from a former Hebrew school teacher

It's not symbols- it's just that the language uses its own characters rather than the Roman characters commonly used in the West.

The English translation of Shoshana is just a phonetic spelling of the word. If you wanted an actual translation, she would be called Rose. Updated On: 9/2/04 at 08:20 PM
