Does anyone know how observant Idina actually is? I am assuming she is not that observant because she performs on Friday night and Saturday and she married a non-Jew. (Although he is an extremely cute non-Jew, so I guess I can forgive her! :) )
I think that if she is taking off for either of the High Holy Days, it will be for Yom Kippur, as that is the holiest day of the year and it would be a pain to have to perform without having eaten or drinken all day. But, if there hasn't been an official announcement, I tend to think she will perform because aren't they pretty good about letting people know actor's absenses?

Posted: 9/2/04 at 10:55pmthe box office won't tell you upfront, they'd lose sales that way. But if you call and ask they have to tell you.

"I am assuming she is not that observant because she performs on Friday and Saturday night..."
Not that this'll neccessarily get anyone anywhere in this topic, but Josh Young, formerly of the Les Miz tour, is a conservative Jew who did perform on those days.

Posted: 9/2/04 at 11:04pmYeah, I know it in't really an indicator. I am a conservative Jew and I probably wouldn't perform on Shabbes, but I have conservative friends who definitely would.

I always think of Shawn Green, who refused to play in the World Series on Yom Kippur...
I don't affiliate myself with any sect of Judaism currently, yet no matter how religious I am, Yom Kippur is spent in shul. No questions asked. Certainly, I don't know what Idina does, but I assume she's been raised to understand the importance of Yom Kippur, and that will determine whether or not she performs that day.

Posted: 9/3/04 at 11:49amMy family is non observant and we don't go to services for Yom Kippur. It's not non-negotiable. It's your choice, not an obligation.

Posted: 9/3/04 at 1:46pmWally, if you want to get technical being partially observant and calling yourself Jewish is worse than not being Jewish at all. Obviously, I'm not very good at following that myself, but in all seriousness Yom Kippur is the most important holiday of the year, the culmination of the High Holy Days. If you're going to observe anything, it should be that, not, as many Americans prefer, Chanukah, which is barely a real holiday.

Technically, a holiday and a Holy Day are the same thing. Christmas is a Holy Day, but we've shortened it to Holiday.
Just thought I'd throw that in there.

Posted: 9/3/04 at 1:53pmWell, there's holy days and then there's High Holy Days- in Judaism, at least. Purim and Shavuot, for example, don't quite rank with Rosh Hashanna and Yom Kippur on the importance scale.

Depending on what time of year she does it, it could be the right thing to do. :P

Hence the question....why does Purim come only once a year?
Plum, you are definitely correct in so many ways, but I don't think you have to say that to be a non-observant Jew who does not observe Yom Kippur in any way is worse than being Jewish at all.
We are Jewish by blood, not by observance of holidays (or Holy Days), or kashrut, or even by knowledge of the prayers. We are Jewish because we are born that way, and no belief or lack thereof can change that.
This does not apply to converted Jews, as I don't know what the technicalities there are, sorry, because bloodline is not involved.

The thing about being partially observant being the worst sin is a quote from somewhere. Being the horrible Jew that I am, I don't remember where. It might have just been something my very religious uncle said.

Well there are definitely Jews that feel that way - all or nothing. I was born Jewish, and choose not to practice. But sabreladay made it sound like Yom Kippur services is nesessary for ANY Jew. I just wanted to provide another viewpoint. Non-observant means just that. That's different than being "partially" observant.
ETA - this is getting way OT.
Last year Wicked was in previews early Oct, and I don't think Idina took any time off. But I'm not sure if that was after the holidays or not.

Posted: 9/3/04 at 6:22pmThe High Holy days were over a few weeks before Wicked debuted. I think they were over by Late September/First week of October. As for previews, she may have missed on, I don't know.
