Film version of Rent just doesn't pay the bills
Wow, that is rough (and a bit disheartening).
I know
I can't decide whether the reviewer had a problem with the material (from the Broadway show) or how it was handled in the film. Maybe a little of both? At least he/she concedes that the performances were good.

Ugh, it looks like it was just taken down. I went to the review and before I read it went to their homepage to see what kind of site it was and when I went back - gone!
If anyone still has it open in another window, could you paste some of it here? (I know you can't paste all of it due to copyright issues.)

my thoughts exactly gav!!
I think the reviewer didn't like the adaptation. The common complaint I've heard from people who've seen it is that it's not cinematic enough and so big chunks of the film come across as dull.

I agree with Michael Bennett. The reviews so far are depicting the movie as dull and boring. That really makes me feel worse about the movie. But in the end, I think it'll turn out okay.

Is everyone else still able to bring this up? Is the "page not found" only happening to me?
Well...I find some of the stage show boring...
Anyway...I'm trying not to let these things bother me. Trying really hard. I still think it'll be a good movie.
This and the other review are voicing some of the concerns that I have been having about the movie.
I love Rent.
I'm pretty sure I'll end up loving the movie.
But it's becoming pretty clear to me that it's probably not gonna be a good movie. Just a faithful adaptation.

Couple thoughts.
One its a f***ing college paper!!!!! no offense to college journalists, as I was one myself, but come on people. She took "writing the review" "journalism 101", etc... I have read and wrote many a college paper review and they are quite laughable. The movie is either under or over analyzed.
Two, there is something about her tone that cries "I could have made it better", "my film 101 project is better", wich makes me discredit anything she says.
Three-I may be wrong in todays world, but her review is too early. when i attended screenings etc.. there was a protocol to when a review can be posted etc.. including college papers. I couldnt post till opening week. ANd I wonder where a student from Easton Pa saw thsi screening? Did her school pay for to go to NYC? Did Philly have a press screening? Or is she baseing this off of an advance screening of a not finished product?
Four when the big wigs review it then I will sit up and pay attenion.

Jeez- a few people are giving reviews and people are jumping on them already.
I just can't wait for BWW people to give reviews. It seems like there is going to a huge war.
Lets take a guess on how many RENT threads will be made from...lets say- Nov 23rd-midight- Nov25th midnight...
I think "OMG RENT MOVIE!" posts are turning into the new "OMG WICKED" posts. I don't think I'll read them, and if I do, I probably wont get into the middle of fights about it.
The movie is what it is, nothing we can do about it. I'm still holding onto the fact that the Larson's liked it, and that one of the OBC members said they liked it better than the stage version.
It might not be perfect, which is something that all Rentheads want it to be...don't lie, but I don't think it's going to be featured on the Razzies or something.
*shrug* We'll find out in 19 days.

Finally got it to come up.
So the original Broadway Rent production opened in 1997? I could have sworn I saw it in 1996
I'm also not sure if a show that has played on Broadway for nearly 10 years would qualify as a "cult" show. There certainly is I guess what you could consider a "cult" of fans as there is with anything that has run for as long as and has toured for as long as Rent, but when I think of a "cult" show, I think of things a little more off the beaten path.
Chin up, guys. Here's a better one:

Ouch. I have to say as much as I'm anticipating this movie whole-heartedly, Im becoming more and more frightened its trying to be too much of a CHICAGO movie and tinkering on the lines of becoming a PHANTOM movie.
Chicago= phenomenal, flashy, and thrilling
Phantom= slow, pointless, and a total disspointment
The question remains: Where will RENT fall?

Whether it's a college paper or not, it's one person's opinion, just like the professional reviews will be. I can see it now, Rentheads are going to go crazy if there isn't 100% approval of this movie. Well, I'd say, prepare yourselves, people, because that isn't going to happen. And, honestly, what difference does it make? If you like it fine, if someone else doesn't, who cares? There's not a movie out there which is beloved by everyone who sees it, and Rent will not be the exception.
As to how someone from Lafayette saw it, there have been tons of screenings across the country in the past couple of weeks, including the one in Kansas City at a college journalist convention. It's not unreasonable to think that she saw it there or at one of the many others. Reading through the online communities in the past few days makes me wonder how many people will be seeing it for the first time when it officially opens on 11/23! Seems like everyone is going to a screening prior to that date. :)
That makes me feel better Em. :)
And now I have to leave, because I'm going to drive myself crazy reading this stuff all night.
Im seeing the movie on the 12th with my friend who has inside people. I can not wait as I have never seen rent, and only heard a few songs...but I've read up on it and I know I will like the story and characters.
I agree that not everyone is going to love it, but it's still a little disheartening. Emcee's link made me feel better too.
