The use of "soundtrack" doesn't annoy me too much, but I do agree with the people who have said if you know the correct term, use it. It's as simple as that.
I don't know about you guys, but I think overtures are vastly underrated. Why don't we get them so much anymore? I miss them. And I think I like the 'Oklahoma!' overture best myself.
The overture in the soundtrack or the cast recording?
The 1998 London cast resoundcordtracking, obviously. ;D
Chocolate cake, or chocolate *cheesecake*? No competition really. ^_^

How do you know that people know what you're talking about when you write soundtrack but mean cast recording? So many shows have both. Perhaps they think you're actually discussing a movie soundtrack. It is not your obligation to use the proper term so you are understood?
I used to use the correct terms, but since I joined BWW, I find it's so much more fun to interchange them.
LOL.

I don't know. I don't tend to go to the trouble of correcting people, but words do have meaning and using words correctly makes communication clearer and easier.
If you want to discuss the "soundtrack" to Dreamgirls or Chicago or Hair, I would assume that you are referring to the recording made of the movie versions of those shows. If, however, you actually were referring to the "cast albums" of those shows, well then you are talking about different recordings entirely, with different casts, songs, arrangements and sound quality, which obviously will lead to confusion making having a coherent discussion difficult. Using terms with accuracy and precision avoids this.
on another note, who really gets annoyed when talking to your friends online when they do not know the different your, you're and to, too's, etc.?
haha I do....sometimes a bit too much.
I use the correct terms for the same reason I use correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar. If people are going to think I'm an idiot, I want it to be because I am an idiot, and not because of some simple aesthetic mistake that's easily avoided. But I totally respect the right of anyone to use the wrong term purposefully if it's for the noble cause of winding up overly-uptight people.

All the time.

Yes, and there are different words for a reason -- because they're different things. So do it right.
(Regional terms for the same thing -- like soda/pop, cougar/mountain lion -- cannot be used to defend! )

Language moves and changes, and unless there is a distinction, like the ones that Margo brought up (Btw, did I mention how much I admire Margo's knowledge), where there is an instance of both (Hair, etc), then I dont see the difference, especially when there isn't a movie.
So Sweeney will be a soundtrack until the day the soundtrack comes out....
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
But seriously...colloquialisms are just that. To denigrate them in a priggish way is tantamount to culturalism.

What is that, 96 points in Scrabble?
Awww! How long did it take you to construct that last sentence? What a delightful example of floccinaucinihilipilification! :3

They're safe, you see. Not too extreme, not too abstract. You must stay away from big words.
CAL
Cool.

Yes. Well. I didn't think that would be a problem.

What's really fun is to go to the student board and tally up the use of such words/phrases as "casted" and "play practice".
Why don't jocks do theatre in high school? Beacuse play practice often conflicts with football rehearsal.
I knew there was a reason I didn't read the student board!
Just wanted to say I love the soundtrack to Spring Awakening, and I also can't wait for the soundtrack to the Company revival!!
A cast recording is not a soundtrack. Period. You can go ahead and call it a soundtrack, but be prepared to look like an ignorant ass who doesn't appear to know jack **** about musical theatre.
I have no problem saying it. It isn't a soundtrack. Theatre is live, without a soundtrack. A cast recording preserves a particular cast and does not represent the exact "track" heard behind the actors. That would be the orchestra.
If I called a Kitty Cat a Lion, I'd be corrected by every single person on this board. If I called a horse a donkey, I'd also be corrected. Call it what it is: A Cast Recording/Cast Album (the best word combos in the English language if you ask me).

Wait, so it's not okay to get mad at the fact that people incorrectly use "soundtrack" when he's talking about a cast recording, while it is okay to get mad at the fact that a person just corrected you?
Some people aren’t worth correcting, because they are hopeless. I’ve learned the hard way that I can’t waste emotional energy on stuff like this. I used to and it took a huge toll on my health. But if you have the room in your life to get really passionate about the cast recording/soundtrack debacle, then more power to you. Just don’t let something like this cause you stress when there is so much else to worry about.

Why would anyone anywhere be so petty and obsessed with correctness that it actually took a toll on their health when people didn't abide by the rules?
That's pretty sad.
Well, I've been on the phone with 911 since you started this thread
"abide by the rules"
So you admit it is a rule that a Cast Recording is not a Soundtrack, and you are refusing to do so out of, what, ignorance, spite, sport?
