Interesting - but I love the sense of humor in the column - a whole paragraph dedicated to Finland. Now THAT'S funny!

I guess that's good for a cast recording.

But if you are a recording artist on a major label, and that's all you sold in this time period - you might lose your record deal.

ljay889, you have an excellent point and it underscores what I think is wrong with the "corporate" thinking at the record labels these days.

Years ago show and classical and jazz music was recorded witha view to a long steady catalogue life. A title that sells a few thousand copies a year year after year is much more valuable than one that sells several tousand copies the first year then sells nothing after its initial flash of popularity is over with.

Sinatra's Capitol albums from the 1950s still sell well
year after year..because they are good. MY FAIR LADY remains a champion cast album because it was produced with care. Alan Jay Lerner said if it sold 50,000 copies he would be happy. It has sold 16 million copies to date and is still selling well almost 50 years later.

The good thing is that Decca is obviously getting behind these releases and promoting them. SPAMALOT and WICKED had done phenomenally well for the label (and we reap the benefits as the cash flow has given the label cause to reissue more of its older titles, even forgotten drek like ANKLES AWEIGH and LOOK MA I'M DANCIN' ~ titles we NEVER thouught would show up legally on CD.)

So.... If you don't already have them you don't have to worry about getting WICKED or SPAMALOT any more. Put those $$$ towards CYRANO, FADE OUT FADE IN, SEVENTH HEAVEN, or A CONNECTICUT YANKEE.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

By compairison, about how many has Wicked and/or Rent sold? Since those are among the only, if not THE only cast recordings to make money in the last 10 years (and obviously Spamalot, too).
