Well, about her voice... I think her voice is powerful but a little screechy and personally it gets annoying to me.
But, how can you not root for her in Brooklyn after watching her video diary.
There is something so non-pretentious about her.

well i thought that her voice was amazing!!
I think she was a great Elphaba but there were some screechy moments in Brooklyn. But to be fair, those are hard notes to belt.
I agree...her voice on her high notes can get a little screechy. I admire her for HITTING those notes...I've never heard anyone go so high, but it's a little painful to listen to at times.
Most of the time she sounds wonderful though.
I loved her video diary, she seems so sweet. And I think her voice is amazing.

I think her voice is obviously strong enough for a leading role on Broadway... my appeal with her is her personality. I've heard so many nice things about her.
To be honest, I didn't really like the songs she performed in on the clips released online. Maybe it was just the lyrics... My favorite was Raven with Ramona Keller singing. But, I have a feeling I may be alone on that one. :)
On a complete side note relating to Brooklyn... they should thank their lucky stars they are the only new musical coming out. They have been getting so much attention (I think much of it is undeserved) simply because they are the only new musical coming out. If they would have waited to open until after the new year... I don't think we would have heard so much about this show (other than the shills - I couldn't resist).

Who was speaking of Eden Espinosa? I want their name, address, and phone number so I can hunt them down.

Why is everyone debating this performance, and not taking a hard(er) look at how uninspired the material is? This is a talented singer-actress, who deserves something fresh. If it's in BROOKLYN, I didn't find it in the downloaded songs, which are like Wildhorn wannabes. Or in hearing the B on B performance. When those people who readily trash Schwartz and Lloyd Webber and go gaga here-- listen again. Those two men write songs that come to something, that explore character, and aren't just a wash of 'feeling.' Craft counts, and so does melody.

hey Auggie27... i understand your frustration. All of the talk has been about the performers and not the actual substance of the show. i don't have a good feeling about the book but I haven't seen the show and I'm in no place to judge. The songs released thus far haven't impressed me in terms of the plot of the show. But, I do like the cast.

I read a NY Time piece and it was very informing
I thought her voice (based on what I saw at Broadway on Broadway) was far superior to Idina Menzel's, but at the same time - that song was so screechy - I thought her head was gonna explode at the end of all that belting...its not for me at all.
I think she is so adorable and I loved that last note. I just don't know how she's gonna hit that 8 times a week! I can't wait to see the show 9/23.
Asking people to sing the way Eden is being asked to sing in unconsciencable (sp??).
Honestly, it's not pleasant and your forcing someone with a lot of potential to blow out their chords very early in their careers.
She's young...and the young think they can do anything (my GOD the notes I tried to hit when I was in my mid-20's!) But the people putting the show together should care enough about their performers to make realistic demands.
Eight shows a week? Crimeny!
robbiej - you know as well as I do, that young people won't listen to a word we say - they'll have to find it out for themselves, and often at the sake of their own health. What a shame.
They won't listen to us...but they should (and I did) listen to my musical directors and coaches.

I think maybe some people are confusing Eden's voice quality with the songs that she's required to sing.

Whoops----sorry about the double post! (computer problems)
I like Eden, but I'm kind of curious as to what Jeff Calhoun will come up with. I just can't get his schlocky revival of Grease out of my head.
