I'm hoping the show will indeed be great fun and a smash hit, but you could hardly call either in keeping with a typical Bill Finn show. Falsettoland, March of the Falsettos, etc. weren't exactly "total fun" smash hits.

its a great show for broadway cause every night the show could change depending on what words they use or not. that little bit on the today show doesnt even show you how amazing the show really is!!!

Really, MB? I find Bill Finn to be like few others in his ability to juggle quite real human events and emotion with a surprising amount of humor (4 Jews, I'm Breaking Down, the Baseball Game).
They might not have been smash hits (although I do recall Falsettos was quite successful) but they deserve to be.
Spelling Bee is far more accessible than any previous Finn show, though, which will prove the difference.

Singer -- I think its probably impossible to do a musical about AIDS that is "total fun" -- though I agree with what I think you are going for. He is able to bring a rare blend of humanity and humor. But for me personally, watching Falsettos on Broadway was a devestating experience -- I never would have characterized the show as "fun".

Interesting. I even find Angels in America fun in its own way, while being devastating. And that is often so important for me in works of great art: I'm both moved to extreme laughter and extreme tears and, while it might be an emotional wringer, I still go away having had fun and having things to think about.
Spelling Bee certainly leans more towards "just fun" but I find those rare shows that are capable of this range of emotion to be my favorites.

they performed a shortened version of the opening number and then spelled a little. Al and Katie both spelled, AL got it wrong at first (the word was something jewish) and Katie got hers right!9something about indian milk?!) and then go smoogligan wrong and commented on who would get that word right when in fact the girl got it right when i saw it and she had to go 2 times in a row to get her off the satge. I LOVE THE BEE!!!!

It was great and I can't wait to see it! I actually did download it to tape from the DVR, but I don't have a way to upload it to the computer, unfortunately. I didn't actually record it on the DVR, only paused to tape it. Sorry! I'm sure it will be online soon.
