re: Anyone at Spelling Bee tonight (Monday) when the girl got COW wrong?

The one I saw had:

a little boy "who dreams of one day having his own room"

a man in a suit "who dresses to intimidate the other players"

a woman with sunglasses on top of her head "who claims to have been abducted by aliens that implanted a second pair of eyes on the top of her head"
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian

When I was there, the comments were as follows:

1) For a woman who had on an huge pearl necklace it was said "while scuba diving she discovered the largest oyster bed in existance"

2) For a teen boy with a huge afro they said, "a competitor in last year's bee, so-and-so was disqualified for hiding a dictionary in his hair"

3) For a man who was a doctor it was said, "when he grows up so-and-so hopes to become a LAWYER"
"You pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays. I don't know about you, but I'd like to make today worth remembering." --Harold Hill from The Music Man

"Rabbi Rosen wears black Hawaiian shirts to show that his Synagogue is fun...but not TOO fun."

"Well, obviously Company is about the Kennedy family. Bobby is played by Raul, and JFK is played by Harvey Fierstein." -vfd88

Some of these sound familiar, but the last time I was there, a guy dressed in all black was said to call himself the spelling ninja.

Ooh, and I think the first time I went they said a lady was a tap dancing champion. Only ones I can think of off the top of my head that weren't yet mentioned.
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

Here's one that illustrates the playful "push the envelope" improvisational wit of Jay Reiss aka Vice Principal Panch who makes these intros up based on something striking about guest spellers.
One man was a trucker and obviously a body builder. Jay Reiss had Miss Perretti say
So and So has a secret spelling weapon. He intimidates the others spellers by scaring the sh**t out of them".
The cast was fighting not to get hysterical----but the audience was so shocked that Miss Perreti would use such language at a spelling bee--that there was a moment of awkward silence... I heard it was priceless...

When I was a contestant at Bee I:

1) Had a special place in the back of my closet called 'Viking Land' where I go when confused

and

2) Was almost done writing an entire musical about bumblebees in braile.

I saw it there was this guy who looked like Galleger so when he went up they said " Docter so and so is afraid to go near watermelons becuase he dosn't want to be mistaken for Galleger." Thats the only one I could think of now.
The towel waving reminded me of a Per?nist rally. I kept chanting "Evita!" whenever they'd pan to the crowds. - SM2

When I was a speller, they said that I was a child prodigy and I was currently writing an opera in brail, and that my favorite show was That's So Raven which is kind of true 'cause I do watch That's So Raven sometimes. There was also a bald guy and they said that he was currenty recovering from head lice. And there was a tall guy and they said he was going through his third growth spurt.
I'm not a gay stereotype. I'm a coincidence.

there was this older guy, prolly late 20's when I went and it was still at 2econd Stage that I didn't really think about it til she said it, but he looked exactly like Dan Radcliffe, aka Harry Potter in the movies, and she kept making cracks about that.

There was one about selling fish on the side as a second job or osmething too.

I remember in an interview Lisa Howard saying one of her fave parts about her role is making up things about the contestants each night, I was under the impression that it was her improving those descriptions, not Jay Reiss...
If I show you the darkness I hold inside, will you bring me to light?

RKrispyT--Jay Reiss actually receives a writing credit for providing additional material. He is responsible for the choice of words to spell and the outrageous unforgettable sentences. He is a writer and comes up with the intros but may certainly receive ideas and input from Lisa and other cast members
I believe he also confers with Sarah to update her ingenious up to the minute social and political commentary that her character Schwartzengrubenniere delivers when the spelling bee halts after Panch has another"incident"--
The program also acknowledges Sarah Saltzburg and Dan Fogler 's writing contribution for creating their characters and much of their dialogue from Crepuscule which Spelling Bee is based on..
Since there is still an improvisational component and this ensemble is so talented, supportive and close knit they all contribute ideas to keep the show fresh and heighten the hilarity surrounding guest spellers. That's why you can keep going back and see a different show each time.

When I saw it, the woman had salt and pepper hair and was wearing grey and black and they said "She likes her outfits to match her hair." And the woman had to stop and catch her breath from laughing before spelling.

Another man was wearing a suit with a bowtie and they joked that he had taken his school picture that day. And Jose complained that "The doofus in the bowtie got an easy word!"

Oh, and Sarah's commentary from last weekend was about Harriet Miers. It didn't even occur to me that they would constantly update it, but it was hilarious.
