Spice Girls Musical In Pre-Production!
The 12-year-olds inside all of us are bursting with excitement!
Details about the upcoming Spice Girls’ musical, Viva Forever, have been released, and it looks like an awesome project!
Viva Forever will be a musical about a reality TV show, and while it won’t feature any characters with the the same names as the Spice Girls, it will reflect their sensibilities and feature 14 of the group’s songs.
Producer Judy Craymer, who was behind the stage production of Mamma Mia!, explained the concept:
"We live in a world dominated by people wanting to be famous. What the Spice Girls did was before those shows became really what they are, and before the world become slightly obsessed by such shows. Viva Forever will encompass the Spice Girls ethos of friendship, identity and being true to yourself, it won't be a tribute or bio show, nor will it feature characters with any of the names of the famous five piece."
Judy Craymer added: "It has a glimpse of the underbelly of TV talent shows, an invented show, and a little bit of comedy romance."
All five Spice Girls met at the end of last year to discuss the project. "All five of us are really super excited. We don't do anything unless all five agree,” said Mel B. “All of us loved Mamma Mia!. We needed someone who would have a great vision alongside ours."
The book will be written by Ab Fab star Jennifer Saunders, so we KNOW it'll be amazing.
Can’t wait!

I still laugh just remembering the Spice Girls PSAs they did on SNL back in the day, especially the ones for small pox and pregnancy. Chris Kattan as Scary Spice was genius (psst, keep your small pox to yourself). And I think it was Molly Shannon as Baby Spice who gave us the advice to "Never ever nurse your baby, it makes your boobs all draggely."
Oh hell, let's get Taymor to direct this one too!
THANK GOD.
But shouldn't we be having a Madonna musical before this? idk, just a thought. I'm willing to write the score if anyone is down to write the book.... (call me)
I'm actually surprised (seriously, folks) that no one's done a jukebox musical based on the Village People. Disco classics, high camp value... what's not to love here?

^ Honestly, they should just put "You Can't Stop the Music" on the stage. That would be fantabulous.
I'm actually really excited about this!
I wasn't crazy about it at first, but I think it could be amazing!

Seems like a great concept, but I just don't see this as the next Mamma Mia. The tunes are just not there.
I was much more interested in the characters than in their music, and I think this would make a great bio, ala Jersey Boys, and definitely not a tribute, ala Rain.
Let's make it real, they have a fascinating story to tell.
OMG i so gotta see this!!! i wanna be scary spice maybe i'll go as her for halloween!
