Posted: 8/30/08 at 6:47pmThere is such a thing as overkill but I'm waiting to see how this turns out? I'm just hoping for an imaginative villain for the show. Puppets still sound strange but we will see. I don't want to hear a bad demo. If it's that bad though I hope they are listening to us. Music is just too important to be mediocre, especially if they want this to be any good and attract anything positive from places like this.

The "demo" that everyone's passing around?
It's not the demo for this show. It's this, mislabeled:

In other words, a theme park/holiday camp show. Not what Taymor/U2 are working on.

i'm honestly not sure HOW I feel about this. I mean...at first hearing. You think...Spiderman the Musical....wtf...
but as a rock influenced musical I see it doing fairly well off Broadway. I don't really see it being on Bway, but I can see it succeeding in the vein of Bat Boy (no pun intended) and Urinetown.
I'll give it a shot without and judgments before actually hearing it....

The thing with this show is that it may not be an original idea, but the fact they are putting a superhero show on Broadway makes it quite interesting.
I mean, how bizarre? People will be divided on it, but I have a feeling that tourists will flock...maybe more so than usual because Spider-Man will most likely bring in more guys, in addition the fact it's written by Bono/Edge/U2 so fans will flock.
So its inevitable that financially it will be successful, the film franchise are in the top highest grossing films ever...so it's at a good start.
Business aside, I reckon people will be pleasently surprised by the end product and will actually quite like it. The spectacle of it may gain praise, but I imagine the music will be quite cool to (however, I do hope they keep in mind this is a musical...not a concert).

Sometimes we need to just step back and say - "Can all this talent really be bad?"
SPIDERMAN - A comic book based in a mythic ideal. The base stories that reach audiences at a intimate level are legends and myths... Spiderman is a mythic hero in a new generation
Julie Taymor - Director - A known innovator and dramatic stage storyteller who while may be criticized for 'content' should never be criticized for being a showman and that's what Broadway needs more of TRUE showmanship not cheap tricks and pyro that we get from thinks like POTO and WICKED. What JT gives us is actual stage magic.
Bono & The Edge - In a career spanning more then 30 years, the writing team has brought us NEW music in every generation bridging the age gap and creating music that is powerful - often energizing - and always quality. How many Grammy's do they have?
Glen Berger — playwright of Underneath The Lintel - doing the book. I haven't seen many good one man shows but Underneath the Lintel is one of the most compelling one man shows EVER. It lacks the "ONE MAN SHOW CONCIET" while never failing to surprise you. The man knows how to write... but more importantly he's an excellent storyteller.
There was an article in which JT said that she hoped Jim Sturgess would take the role of Peter Parker / Spiderman because she felt he was perfect. Lets think about this - a slightly nerdy guy, who has an unsual sex appeal with an ability to bring a broad range of emotion to a character who is experiencing a big journey while not coming off campy. UM - did anyone see ATU? You may have hated the movie, but you can't deny the boy knows how to act and more importantly tell a story in song!

So I'm not ready to bash this musical concept... I think it's gonna shock alot of us and more then one person bashing it now will end up writing more then one post about how great it is.
THIS MUCH TALENT CAN NOT BE WRONG.

Posted: 9/2/08 at 6:22amI swear I have heard about this show for the longest time now, but nothing recently, so I have to wonder if it is going anywhere. You think with the talent power behind it, it would actually create some buzz.

Comic book fans don't want to see their heroes musicalized.
This looks like Taymor's TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN'.
