I read this on IMDB and that it sounded rather fabricated. Does anyone know anything about this production? I thought I read something about it on here one time.
"i was privileged to get to attend a workshop of spiderman (hopefully to be on broadway) the week before christmas. saw evan rachel wood and jim sturgess. they are both vocal powerhouses, both very tall, very attractive. so much chemistry, i'd be worried if i was marilyn manson. erw plays the role of mary jane perfectly. she puts kirsten dunst to shame. which isn't a surprise, it doesn't take much, but erw's acting and singing abilities make her the leading talent amongg her peers. as for the unlikely choice of jim sturgess for peter parker, his american accent is flawless and he has the mischevious sparkle that tobey maguire lacks in his wooden acting. hope taymor makes this to broadway. this was the second round of workshops. erw and js were perfect, some of the supporting cast was weaker, but they covered it perfectly. the lyrics are kind of rock opera sounding, think jesus christ superstar meets comic books. bono and edge teamed together with taymor to write this and it shows.
erw looked more normal than usual. wore a pair of black slacks and a powder pink turtleneck. js looked like your tyical hot british guy. during the q&a they played footsie under the table. no pictures were allowed, just audio interviews. julie wants to finalize before allowing pictures or video but i think a guy was taking pictures with his cellphone camera. the reporters went between calling evan "evan" "rachel" and "evan rachel" and js tells the room, "only i can call her rachel." they kept making physical contact. he'd elbow her in the ribs or she'd be waving her hands around when she talks and accidentally brush against him. js talked about stage fright if they go to broadway. erw said she's trying to get over stage fright before recording her album. does anyone know when this is coming out? 2008? she never said. she said js would duet with her at least once on her album. and he said something like "it's part of our being best friends with benefits." i know i wasn't alone in thinking that something was going on between them. if they aren't involved yet, it seems like they could be.
the obligatory question about manson and erw said she didn't want to talk about it at the moment because it wasn't important to what they were talking about. thought this was strange because she always talks about him. highlights were jim and evan's duets in the show. she has a strong, lovely solo song. if you thought her voice was good in atu, it's even better now. obvious she's been working with it. js calling erw "the most talented person i know." erw telling him to stop flattering her. the two said they would make time in their schedules for spiderman because they love julie, and they will do anything she wants them to do. julie is helping with erw's album she mentioned, but never said how or what."
Any thoughts?
I did hear about Rachel Evan Wood and Jim Sturgess doing a reading of the show. I also read or heard in an interview with Bono that he thinks the show will be great on Broadway if they can pull off all of the special effects that they have in mind.
Do you really think they're already work shopping though??
There was indeed a reading months back. Where they are currently in the process I don't know.
I wish whomever had written that spent more time talking about the actual show, and making it legible, instead of just saying "they seemed like they were together, they said they were, it made sense, it seemed like if there wasn't there could be, sooner or later".
P.S. Has anyone who's here and in the Biz heard any buzz about this, good or bad?

i read that Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood were officially casted in it
http://www.superherohype.com/news/topnews.php?id=6780
"officially cast in it"
'Casted' is not a word.
And let's hope it's not anywhere near as bad as a Spider-Man musical they did at Universal Studios.
I am actually really, really, inexplicably excited for this.

Is it Bono and U2 or Bono/The Edge (whatever that is)?
All that article says is that Sturgess and Wood did the workshop, which is common knowledge.
No one is "officially signing on" to the full scale production, as it won't happen for quite some time.
It's Bono,

and The Edge.

The Edge is his stage name, he's the lead guitarist for U2. As I understand it, he and Bono write most of the bands music together.
"And let's hope it's not anywhere near as bad as a Spider-Man musical they did at Universal Studios."
I think Bono's standards are a little higher than Universal Studios. But only slightly
I would say they are extremely higher.
I would say that this is one really rare case where even if the music sucks, which it very well might, the show will be kick-ass no matter what. I sure as hell want to see Spider-Man. ON A STAGE.

Well, to be honest - I absolutely HATE the demo recording; though I'm sure the music is bound to improve by the time it hits a Broadway theare... hopefully.
Saying U2 wrote the music vs. Bono and The Edge wrote the music is sort of the same thing, given that Bono and The Edge have always written all of U2's music. Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton contribute their own drum and bass parts, but really haven't written any melodies or lyrics in the band's 30 year history, with only incidental exceptions.
Several comments:
1) xOnMyOwnx may have been on the right track, he just made a typo. I seem to think that a musical of "Spiderman" is such a weird idea it may have castRATed the leads.
2) I understand the producer of this show, who had been dreaming of doing this piece for years was Tony Adams, friend of Blake Edwards and producer of "Victor/Victoria" on stage. If memory serves me, he had a stroke at the contract signing for "Spiderman the Musical" and died several days later.
Draw your own conclusions.....

How did you get a hold of this demo exactly?
And if one of your favorite shows is Starlight Express, how can anyone take your word seriously?
Yeah, its happening, and its going to run on stunts more than the music. My uncle. Scott Rogers, was the stunt director for the movie, and so he signed on to do the musical. I'm just happy that I'm related to someone who can get me tix for free on opening night!
OH DEAR GOD NO!!!!!
come on people.Spider Man the musical?
what is theatre coming to?
all these movies turning into musicals, sure some work great but others like SPIDER MAN!
....
i have a bad feeling that broadway is losing ideas.
They said a musical about Superman would never fly. Weeeeeellll, we showed them...
Oh... uh, wait a minute.....
The music is pretty horrible...
I’m intrigued by the prospect of a Spiderman musical, and I hope for the best. I’m not familiar with “It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane…” but it’s my understanding that the Superman musical is actually good and well respected. So if Superman can work why not Spiderman?

I’m sure the success of the movies has factored into the decision to musicalize Spiderman, but it is first and foremost a comic book, so I’m sure the show will credit the comic book as its source of inspiration, not the movie.
I have faith that the creative team will at least create something interesting, if not good, and they’re still working on it so it’s too soon to criticize the music.
