At this point in time the main reason to do a movie of P&G would be Audra Ann McDonald, a living breathing beautiful actress who can actually sing and act the role. I know in Hollywood More TONYS than god means diddly but she is the real deal. Beyonce was God Awful in DREAMGIRLS, she can't act a lick, if she could, with her looks and popularity she'd already have an OSCAR.
If you read the reviews of Lee's movie that was released today, I doubt anyone would back him in an undertaking this grand. It's a shame because he did show promise early on and could have made an interesting film of this, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I don't think Lee would "R&B up" the score... I think if he decided to move away from the operatic end, he would take the route of deepening the jazz connections in the score, casting people who can sing jazz and musical theatre well, instead of opera singers.

I fully support this remake, let's face it the original Otto Preminger film is not that great. I would be very interested to see Spike Lee tackle a musical, he did great with the filming of Passing Strange, and his musical numbers in school daze were done very well. Also, I was so disappointed when he dropped out of the Rent film, would have love to have seen what he could have done with that. And I didn't read anywhere in the article about having an interest in beyonce, so I'm not sure where that came from.
