"Sorry but, I feel the need to say "duh." Of course its not like Guettel, its rock music."
Guettel and LaChuisa have written better rock (esque) music than spring Awakening.

Educator, I don't see how you can call Yankee's thread jevenile, when you siad siamese dream's opinion was wrong in your "rebuttal". You can disagree with her, but there is no need to call her opinion wrong. That, to me, is pretty jevenile.

Gang, it's official -- SPRING AWAKENING is a hit!
Anytime a show inspires such extreme opinions, banter, and ranting -- well -- need I say more?
If it were just a *yawn* and nobody cared, there wouldn't be the uncountable number of threads on this board.
SPRING AWAKENING has gotten people to think, to write, to criticize, to sing, to shake their heads in disgust, and to raise their heads with new optimism. It has done what art is supposed to do. It has inspired all of this.
Congrats to Sater, Sheik, and Mayer!

Jv92, I just find this shows music and Guettel on totally different levels. Maybe its because when I think of Guettel I immediately think if Piazza which, is obviously opposite of this show.

Oh Munk, I must have missed that in the "Before Posting..." thread.

I just don't see what the point is. I don't go ad express my hate for show's I don't care about and post it in a new thread. It would be a waste of my time.

Smartful Dodger-
So has Grey Gardens! There have been plenty of people I've talked to who haved hated Grey Gardens as much as I hated Spring Awakening.
Sorry, had to say it.

Wonderful, I did not author the rebuttal. I came upon it searching blogs in Google. In hind sight, I wish I hadn't posted the link as it is not very nice and I apologize.

If you truly hate Spring Awakening, an entire thread devoted to hating it is not conducive to lowering its profile. It's great if you want to stir the fans into a frenzy that will make them more devoted and vocal.
I've seen plenty of negative opinions and critiques on the neutral threads. If there's anything valid to be said it can be said there.
With that said, if this thread is going to remain open and active, may I suggest a rousing game of 'worst Spring Awakening lyric'? That one always keeps a party fresh, and there are so many good answers.

H'lo, Craww!
Oh, right, you don't know me, because I never do more than lurk. Ever. Anywhere. Ever. Even on LiveJournal. So never mind.
Anyway, though--Yankee doesn't hate it, as she's said; in fact, she supports it. She just... doesn't like it. As for me, I haven't even listened to the music yet (ZOMGZ BLASPHEMEEE) so I can't pass judgement...
...Although it most certainly has succeeded. I agree with Smartful Dodger 100%.

JV92, the demo of this board and the target for SPRING AWAKENING are more compatible and better aligned than the target for GREY GARDENS and the general population here. Granted, I LOVE both shows. I just don't find the same level of discourse or interest in productions that are outside a fairly narrow band of, dare I say (oh, I'm gonna get nailed for this next statement), "pop" theatre on Broadway. Before folks get angry, I love popular as much as the next guy. There ain't nothing wrong with that!
I'm only saying that SPRING AWAKENING has broken through and has become part of a shared online experience where so many people have opinions or interests -- here, at YouTube, at the show's official site, at MTV, etc. GREY GARDENS has also broken through but in slightly different circles; I'm more apt to talk about that show over dinner and wine with friends who don't live online and who don't respond to viral marketing efforts. GREY GARDENS will continue to build and will get a couple of bumps when the CD is released next month and then again when the awards season starts in April.

In other news a friend of mine said they were watching the NY news and saw that Kerry butler was confirmed for Ariel! I don't know if they are telling the truth or not, but i am going to keep asking them about it

Someone define "HIT"
It's an elusive thing, critics may love a show and it may even have a cult following, but SPRING will most likely lose it's investment, it has had good numbers the last few weeks but most weeks have been below the nut and we will see what happens after the last Holiday week.
And touring, high school and/or community productions are most likely out of the question.
I think it is a good show and the Broadway production has a lot of talent and energy, but it is hardly the breakthru or ground breaking show as has been touted.
I think the book and lyrics are it's weakest aspects which are not so apparent on a first viewing.
Sheik's music is terrific, if only he had a better lyricist.
Just my opinion.

Curtain, I agree about the score. I ove Sheik's music, but Sater's lyrics are sometimes good, but many of them are cringe-worthy.

Well because everyone said this thread was useless and not needed so rather than posting a thread about it, I posted it here

There's already a thread about Mermaid casting, though. Why didn't you just post it there. If you think the thread is useless, don't post on it, and it will die.

She didn't like it.
