It's not JUST over rated.
it's "totally ****ing awful!"
Speaking of Grey Gardens, which is also pretty over rated...
I haven't seen it yet but it does get mentioned on our board. I am afraid though, a title like Grey Gardens makes me think of funeral halls and things well past their prime. Maybe bad title?
Duncan is a fairly popular song writer so just on his name alone many young people would show up for the show. Others for the nudity, they just don't get enough of it on the Internet I guess? With all of the censorship going on, it draws on the rebelous stage of life. It is not new to some of us but the younger you get the less you see this in any other form but on the Internet or a Magazine. To them it is a new concept because it isn't seen very often with Actors they feel they can relate to .
So many young people are quietly seeing their friends or fellow classmates die in Iraq and Afganistan right now. No end of this War is even being promised in earnest. We even hide their coffins as if it was such an inhonorable thing for them to die of. So maybe, something that isn't so good but allows them to escape into what for most of them is a whole lot better to think about?
Life for many young people is hardly a Disney tale now is it? Reality can really stink. I know what my teens are going through and they definitely don't have a very good feeling about the state of our Country these days. Vietnam was something I barely remember and my life wasn't directly affected by it luckily. Yet I didn't grow up mostly in a time of real War. None of my classmates had to serve overseas, nor did my Husband ever have to see active duty in a War zone. It is a different World for many young people today.
Those really familiar with Theatre may pooh pooh it but some of them have grown past all of this while others, who think their best years have passed them by might be drawn to it, hoping to re-live some old faded fantasy. Talent, art? All in the eyes of the beholder. For some reason a bunch of old folks who can vote picked this one. What reasons did they give for this? To get this many votes, something collectively is going on. Is it all about the youth or their own spent youth? I am curious to know the answers to these questions.
Maybe it's the sheer and utter boredom years of revivals can bring if they show up in less than ten year increments? I know I am sick of them and won't go to see them. So maybe that is why it did so well? I think American Idol has done some good for the stage scene, don't many of you?
>> The innovation comes in the form of transcending time and space with the musical numbers. These are kids in 1890's Germany, yet through music, the kids of 100+ years ago are able to communicate their feelings via song to present day people. When a musical number begins, it's not 1890 any more. The singers are floating somewhere in space with their thoughts, showing, clearly, that the feelings of a person are timeless and transcend everything.
You have got to be kidding me.

Yes, it's proved that mediocrity is alive and well.
It was the hands-down winner in an interesting but weak season.
That, and the Tony voters must have a pretty epic taste for "Dust In The Wind"-style ballads.
Why it won for choreography I really really really really couldn't tell you.

Tkt2Ride: The show is about teenagers. Teenagers can't legally fight in a war. I fail to see how Spring Awakening can even remotely relate to Iraq.
after reading theaterguys "live journal" and laughing, now I know where his lack of maturity comes from...
*yawn*
theaterguy, if they called you to be one of the guys in the show, would you call it a pile of dog crap then? would you turn down the show because it totally F**king sucks in your own humble opinion?
YES and the TONYS is over - its a popularity contest - and get over it ( to all ! )

Hell Yes I would turn it down. I woulnt be caught dead in that show.
Heh, well, if this message board ruled the Tonys things probably would have turned out very different.
Tkt2ride, the image the title Grey Gardens conjures for you is actually pretty accurate, although I think it's a good title (it's memorable). It is a show about things well past their prime.

I think you mean "you're"
and I am totally serious.
Yes, you've got to be kidding me. You would turn down a paying job in a musical that's doing pretty well, because you don't like it?

He's singing rock!!! Do you honestly think all the other rock and pop stars are singing correctly? He's even said numerous times he doesn't think of himself as a singer.
obviously by my picture i'm a little biased but i don't think it's overrated at all. The music is beautiful and this whole show truly moved me. As a 19 year old i definitely relate to all the "angsty" parts of the show. That IS what kids are going through. And while some of these themes have been done before that's only because they are totally relevant topics. People who are complaining that it's not "traditional broadway" are stupid because as time goes on you have to make way for new things...art is always changing so get over it.
It's not only overrated but I don't even think that it's a good show and refuse to recommend it my friends.

And if you ever get a job in a Broadway show, you too can suffer through vitriolic insults hurled at you by a bunch of bitter, anonymous dweebs on the internet. But then again, you might not have an "annoying vibrato" like Raul Esparza, or a "nasally tone" like Fantasia.
And perhaps you'll be really humble when you win your first Tony Award and say how much you didn't deserve it, you know, because those Spring Awakening guys were really obnoxious. They should have thrown shout outs to Grey Gardens or at the very least acknowledged that the show they worked on for the last eight years was a piece of crap. But then again, maybe you shouldn't act surprised when you win. Julie White acted surprised and we all know how incredibly obnoxious and insincere her speech was.
Or maybe when you fail at acting, you'll turn to writing. Just make sure all of your rhymes are perfect. Because if they're not, the entire show will suck. Oh, and be sure to add a dance break that has nothing to do with anything, because that's what choreography is. "Movement" is something else entirely and surely not worthy of an Award.
I like Spring Awakening a lot, but as usual, the fangirls make it entirely overrated. I think it's perfectly fine to like SA, and even to obsess over it, but only if you like other shows as well. That being said, a lot of teenagers can relate to it and it's a great example of the timelessness of teenage feelings. However, I wonder if I would feel the same way if I wasn't an angsty teenager.
What I really like about Spring Awakening is that it shows what teenagers go through in school. If you don't believe me, listen to the song "All That's Known." "All That's Known" is the one song that made me fall in love with Spring Awakening because I felt it was the most accurate portrayal of the feelings teenagers experience in school in any musical.
- I'm speaking about shows in general, and here is a good example.
If you think about it...Shows are only "over rated" when someone doesn't like it.
If the people who don't Spring Awakeing loved it, they wouldn't be calling it over rated would they?
For instance, I do not care for the Drowsy Chaperone. I think it is over rated. People tell me how funny and amazing it is. I didn't find it to be as good as everone says.
I enjoy Spring Awakening. Everyone who hates it says it's over rated. GO figure.
So, my rambling does have a point...bare with me. Do you agree? Is it a matter of personal opinion wether something is over rated or not?
duh

And another snarky comment.

You make an excellent point. Too many people are under the misguided notion that their personal opinions are facts.
