Well I mean, does the hype of it being different and unconventional overshadow the lack of quality in the shows writing?

Shows are rated by personal opinion in the first place so it would then make sense that it would be the personal opinions of those who would think that a show is over rated.

Okay, I definately understand all of the opinions expressed on this thread. I feel that certainly people are entitled to dislike Spring Awakening. Here's my personal take:

I visited New York last Spring and did a bit of a broadway run. I saw The Drowsy Chaperone, Spelling Bee, Spring Awakening, and Moon for the Misbegotten. Of these shows, honestly I really enjoyed them all, BUT Spring Awakening left the biggest impression. I am a young person and am drawn to both "rock" musicals and the classics. My personal fascination with Spring Awakening comes from the fact I have never experienced a broadway show like that. The others were delightful, but Spring Awakening was contemporary, the music speaking directly to a younger generation. Leaving the theatre, I was a little uncertain of what to think, given the mix of 1890s Germany and contemporary indie/pop tunes. In the end though, I think the show triumphs. Absolutely I loved, loved the performers and how they work together onstage. The music is addictive. The book was a little rough around the edges for me, but you know, it worked. Choreography...well there wasn't much. Honestly though, not every musical is going to have a strong dance focus...

So in the end, if someone told me I had the opportunity to see Spring Awakening 10 more times or 20, or 100 I would go. Like it or not, this show has found success. If you dislike it, just see another fantastic show. Those of you who live in NYC don't know how lucky you are to have such great theatre at your fingertips! :)

I think Spring Awakening's music is quite awful.

The lyrics are terrible and the score is atrocious. I have no patience for these "fake rock scores" like Jonathon Larson & whoever this dynamic duo are. They don't sound rocky enough. Even Aida comes off as genuine rock music when compared to these two (and that's saying something)

I mean, the music really is terrible.

haha wow that gave me a good laugh because seriously you must be joking. Oh and have fun writing on this board with your impressive title of "featured actor" who knows maybe one day you'll be bumped up to the fake title of "broadway legend" just because you have no life and post on this board all day. Why don't you let everyone know when you've composed a full musical and won a couple of tonys.
