I wouldn't think it would be bad for a depressed person...we see the pain that is left AFTER the fact...we also see Melchior chose to live though he contemplates suicide.
Besides, being depressed does not equal feeling suicidal. I have found it rather cathartic at times...and I've seen it many times.

The gay scene between Hans and his friend in the 2nd act was kinda delivered in a comedic way...
Interesting that you mention that, because it's one of the things I can't stand about the musical.
In the original play, that scene is sweet and touching. Those two boys are the only characters in the play who feel real love and not just adolescent lust. In the musical, they play it for laughs. I hate it whenever the homosexual relationship is played as a joke, just because it is homosexual, but especially when the play portrayed it as the opposite.
OMG! Gay boys! They're kissing! Heeee! So funny!

Posted: 9/27/08 at 12:55pmYero, I totally agree. I always want to ask people what is so funny and sometimes people respond with how aggressive Hanschen is and how naive Ernst is. I really doubt that is why some people are laughing but I do wish that some actors would play it more honestly and less over the top. Melchior and Wendla as well as Moritz and Ilse get a sweet moment...how come the boys can't?

Posted: 9/27/08 at 7:37pmTo be fair, every time I've seen it no one has ever laughed during the kisses themselves, but only at the dialogue which IS played as comedic. So it may be directed inappropriately but usually I find that the audience is pretty ok with the kissing, although there are always exceptions.

Posted: 9/27/08 at 8:24pmYes, but what Yero and I are saying is that it is ridiculous that they even play the scene that way when the other couples are treated with respect and played very seriously. The fact that people are laughing just makes it worse.

Posted: 9/27/08 at 8:30pmRight, it's completely fine to think the scene is directed the wrong way. im just saying the laughs come from the scene being directed as such for the most part, not usually from the audience laughing at a gay couple being a gay couple.

Posted: 9/27/08 at 8:31pmI think it's played/directed comically partly due to the way the musical is written. In the play it seems as if they have just finished making love at the start of the scene and the dialogue is more emotional. In the musical the scene is written more awkwardly and lends itself to a more comical interpretation. It's also very difficult to talk about skimming off the cream without laughing. I don't agree with the way its directed, but I think the problem lies within the writing.
