i am not so interested in comparing shows, but it is interesting to see how the two made it to broadway and their respective success as they do target the same audience.

I really fail to see why you think they target the same audience- I suspect it is more that you consider them similar in creative concept or style. I feel that a lot of people around here were so impressed by Spring Awakening that they wish it could have the same impact financially and run for decades, but I say, just be happy that it had so much success artistically, because box office wise, it is certainly not its time

Not even a good comparison at all. Just because they are "ROCK MUSICALS" does not mean thay are the same. Rent is great, SA is great, end of story.

curtain, what a sad addition to this thread. i dont think anyone was saying that. and then to simply add that rent is a better show, is, well, sad. i think sa is a show that allows a chance to bring more quality shows to bway, but it needs to be a success, the problem is not the quality of the show. i mean, the reviews are some of the most joyous, profound, unanimous raves i have ever read. my night in the o niell was magic.

1183, what CurtainPullDowner said is virtually the same thing as what you said in this post: "part of the struggle for spring awakening is the fact that it is, simply, a smarter show."

How is his comment "sad" while yours is perfectly acceptable when they portray the same sentiment? If you like Spring Awakening, fine, but being hypocritical and putting down other shows in an effort to lift this one up isn't doing the show (or the perception of the fanbase) any favors.

SA does need more publicity I think that raido would be a good idea however there is no NYC raido station that plays alt rock the kind of rock that SA uses. NYC had 92.3 FM K rock but that got switched to a talk raido station and now there is no more NYC alt rock stations.

Also, In terms of what is a better show eiather RENT or SA I must say that it's night and day. Both different yet just as good.

But, the thing bout RENT as oppose to SA is that it still has all these important themese that people can relate to ten years later. And I know that someone said that it has past its time on Broadway. I just wonder why shows like Les Miserables could play for close to 20 years but ten years is too long?

i think they are both equally amazing but everyone is going to have their own opinions.

i think as far as RENT is concerned either way if Jonathan Larson died or not it was going to be a hit. i think the lyrics and they way Jonathan put the words together for RENT is remarkable and they wowed! me .. but as for SPring Awakening it wasnt so much the lyrics that got me but the story and the performances of the actors, the lighting, the set. so even though i both equally love them and secretly obsess, there are differences but its only in the eye of the beholder.

Well I got to see the original cast of Rent(I was 1re: Spring Awakening bo vs. Rent bo in 96...I was one of the people camping out on the sidewalk for tickets...I wanted to see it after all the media coverage(performances on Rosie,GMA,Today, and they even did a piece on it on 20/20) and listening to the soundtrack over and over..It spoke to me and many people between the ages of 18-40 dealing with many of the issues...I think Sprng Awakening needs to have a huge media blitz, it needs to get it's name out there...I work with teenagers all day and they have not heard of Spring Awakening until I mentioned it..now they bought the soundtrack, looked at performances online and they really want to go see it...I don't think you can compare the two....to me they are very different....it subject matter does speak to a generation and everyone can relate to the feelings these characters are having...thats why Spring Awakening does have potential(if it gets it's name out there)to be huge
