For w/e reason I thought that most people who loved Spring Awakening are Rent fans as well.

Me too! (I didn't LOVE either one, particularly. I liked the music and was moved at certain points. But definitely not complete faves. I do prefer SA to Rent, maybe because Rent is not nearly as good with its present cast as it was when I saw it way back when.) I do see the connections between the audiences of the 2 shows. (Although at SA, someone felt it was ok to bring a 10 year old.)

I think if you compare Rent to SA at the same time, today, people may prefer one a lot more than the other.
However, I think those who loved Rent when it first opened, way before any knowledge of SA, would tend to love SA.
Did that make any sense??
I went ga-ga over Rent when it opened, but then the magic wore off somewhat (not sure if it was time, or inferior producitons, or growing up more, or what). Now I am ga-ga over SA. (Which I think is a superior show all around.)
Someone took a 10-year-old to SA?!

Oh yeah. They sat right in back of me. I couldn't believe a mom would take a ten year old to that show.
As I said, I was never ga-ga for either one. I enjoyed both (SA more so than Rent).
I think SA's character development is weaker, but what it lacks there it makes up for in other ways.

good, honest reviews. I pretty much agree with a lot you have said, esp about Grey Gardens which took ages for me to warm to. But for Christine E alone it was phenomenal.
Hated Spring Awakenings though. I found it tedious and as pretentious as Rent - despite having a pleasant score in places - but I am sure it will be around a long time

I'm really surprised, although at this point I shouldn't be, at Muscle's level of tolerance for some people being so harsh with his opinions. I disagree with most of the criticisms, but I wouldn't discredit him just because he thinks differently. Here is my rating:
Les Miserables ****
The Vertical Hour- Never saw it
A Chorus Line *****
The Apple Tree **
Curtains- Never saw it
Spring Awakening ****
Grey Gardens ****
Avenue Q ***
Beauty and the Beast- Never saw it
Chicago *****
Hairspray ***
Jersey Boys **
Mamma Mia No Stars!
Mary Poppins- Never saw it
Spelling Bee ****
Rent ****
Tarzan **
Spamalot *
The Color Purple ***
The Drowsy Chaperone ***
The Producers **
The Lion King ****
The Phantom of the Opera ***
Wicked ***

Posted: 3/28/07 at 12:28amI was listening to the recording of The Apple Tree with Barbara Harris and it was really great, what a fantastic show! I wanted to say it again.

The revival was great, IMO, especially the three principals made a great impact on me (Kudisch' incredible rendition of the title song is quite underrated). Having said that, to me, Harris gives some definite versions of a few of the songs.

Well, Kudisch was out when I saw it, but I was thrilled to see Sean Palmer, he was fantastic! He will be great in The Little Mermaid Im sure. Oh, I love "Gorgeous", Harris is perfection, I agree, I truly enjoy the recording, almost as much as I enjoyed the show.
I really felt that Broadway is a magical place once again. A Chorus Line, The Apple Tree, Grey Gardens, The Vertical Hour and Spring Awakening, were just excellent shows to see, I even enjoyed Les Miz, which is not my kind of show. This season is really good, finally!
