Stage 42 as a Broadway House?

Stage 42 is already fairly large, and only a few seats away from being Broadway eligible. Could it be? It's out of the way, but so is Lincoln Center. Could it possibly house Broadway shows, if it met all the requirements? It's a really nice, modern theater, with, I'm sure, ample wing space. Why not make it a Broadway theater? I think we've learned that location doesn't really matter. If people want to see a show, they'll figure it out.

Stage 42 as a Broadway House?

I understand Wikipedia should never be seen as a reliable source, but this seems to be the reason.

"Stage 42 is one of the largest Off Broadway theatres but has proven to be an expensive venue to mount shows, partly due to contracts with theatrical unions. Theater producers have speculated that Stage 42 might become a Tony-eligible Broadway house, by the addition of one seat to bring it to the 500 seat minimum required for Tony eligibility. On the other hand, going to 500 seats would probably require negotiating new contracts with the unions, raising costs further."

Stage 42 as a Broadway House?

this subject has been rehearsed over and over albeit perhaps not under the current name. Bottom line is that the Shuberts do not want another Broadway house.
