Stage Dooring

Posted: 1/10/06 at 9:54amOk. My plans for going to NYC have changed a little and I now plan on seeing Jersey Boys and Sweeney Todd. I was wondering how the stage door situation is for both of these shows, and what the cast is like.

Posted: 1/10/06 at 11:31amwhen i stage doored Jersey Boys, I was one of about 6 people waiting. The entire cast signed and were all very nice. Sweeney has a much larger crowd because of Patti, but everyone singed the day I stage doored that show. You just have to be patient because they take a while to come out. Have fun!

The only time I've ever stage doored was at Wicked in Chicago. There were maybe about twenty pepole there, and everybody signed except for the understudy for Nessa.
The total waiting time, for Kate and Ana, was about an hour I think.
What are the casts like? I don't know anything about the cast of Sweeney Todd. I hear the Jersey Boys are all very sweet.

Posted: 1/10/06 at 2:13pmPatti is an absolute doll! She is very sweet and patient with fans. She signed playbills and took pictures with anyone who asked. The rest of the cast is just as delightful. When I went both in Octover, they were so excited about the show and grateful. The whole cast is just very friendly and kind.I had a great experience with her and the rest of the cast!

Posted: 1/10/06 at 3:22pmIt all depends on the cast really. The day I saw Jersey Boys, the entire cast walke dout the stagedoor, waved goodbye to everyone, and left. They do seem very nice, though.

Posted: 1/10/06 at 3:39pmJersey Boys stage door was fairly crowded when I saw it. Not Wicked-like crowded, but certainly more than 6 people.

Posted: 1/10/06 at 3:53pmThere were 6 people on Friday, December 2nd when I stage doored...I'm guess it has gotten more popular in the past month. What I noticed though, was that the audience for Jersey Boys had an average age over 45 and most people that age do not stage door shows, which could explain why it was not too crowded.

Definately depends on the day
I stage doored Sweeney Todd last month and everyone was SO nice. Michael is extremely kind ...signed autographs, took pictures with everyone...ect.
I hear Patti lets people take pictures with her but when I went she said shed rather not that night because she "looked like a dog" (which was untrue because she always looks gorgeous, but thats okay)....
but she was very nice about it.

Posted: 1/10/06 at 4:45pmAnyone know how it is for "Spamalot" and "Color Purple"? I am seeing both those and "Jersey Boys" when I got NY in July and I really want to meet most of the cast of TCP and particularly Lauren Kennedy in Spamalot.

Posted: 1/10/06 at 4:47pmIt makes me sad to think that after all this time, when I finally get to see Jersey Boys, I might not even get to meet them.

Posted: 1/10/06 at 4:50pmPatti LuPone is one of the most amazingly wonderful people you will ever come across. So truly down to earht and touched that you would take the time to speak with her. It's like wait lady - we are the greatful ones. Stage door anytime Patti is involved - you will NOT be disappointed!

It sounds like, as far as Sweeney Todd is concerned I won't be disappointed.
For JB, has anyone stage doored more than once? I was wondering if they do the whole "wave and walk away thing" alot.

Posted: 1/10/06 at 6:07pmCall me crazy, but when I stage-doored after Noises Off, Patti was not exactly the epitome of grace & whatnot that's being described here. Maybe I caught her on an off night, but she seemed very put-out with the whole thing...tho she did seem to sign for everyone or at least most everyone. On the other hand, Faith Prince was a delight at that stage door, as was Katie Finneran (whatever happened to her, by the way?).

Posted: 1/10/06 at 7:17pmI am curious about The Odd Couple as well.I will be going to a matinee on 1/25.I have heard that not all the stars come out after matinees and Matthew Broderick never signs autographs after shows.I have heard that Matthew does sign before shows sometimes.I was wondering if anyone can confirm these things and when I should get to the theater before the show(If the Matthew Broderick rumor is true).

I saw Odd Couple and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels last weekend. I saw the Sunday Odd Couple Matinee, and both Nathan Lane AND Matthew Broderick came out. It was amazing.
For DRS, I saw it on Saturday Night and met everyone except Joanna Gleason and Norbert Leo Butz ((his understudy was performing that night))

FeelingElectric, expect only Nathan Lane and Rob Barlett to come out on Wednesday. Broderick sleeps.
Night Life Love, they all came out on Sunday because you saw the 1-show day. There was no evening show.
They're both very gracious and sign after evening shows....if you catch 'em on a good day they may take pictures!

I was at the Starbucks across the street from the Odd Couple theater last month when a matinee let out and it was madness. It seemed like half the audience was at the stagedoor, and a whole bunch of other people were lurking across the street watching.
Do what I did and count the black town cars waiting to get an idea of how many people are coming out.

Posted: 1/10/06 at 8:03pmSWEENEY TODD's stage door is crowded, but all the actors are very sweet. I think when I went there were about 25 people there. Patti wouldn't take pictures because she claimed she looked horrible. (Yea right Patti.) Michael was so sweet! He chatted with everybody, took a picture with everyone who wanted it, and thanked us all for waiting for him!

Thanks for the info, Yankeefan. What I think I will do is go to The Odd Couple stage door Tuesday night (1/24)
after I see (Chicago starts at 7 and Odd Couple starts at
that should give me time to meet both casts.I always treat the stars with the utmost respect. They are people first, actors second.

Just chiming in on the Chicago stage door as well as the Spamalot stage door.....
Spamalot is always a mob scene.... get there early, be upfront. For the most part, everyone signs. I have no idea about the new King Arthur and his signing practices, but he seemed very nice when I met him the other day at the theatre.
Chicago, a lot of the cast tends to bolt right away, so same thing. Get there quick and be up front (I dont even know if they put up barricades anymore or anything).
Also, visited a friend in the cast of Sweeney after a mantinee before Christmas and I think Patti is the only one who didnt come out. It was bitter cold and there was a small crowd, but everyone seemed to come away happy.

I saw a Saturday matinee (the 7th) of Jersey boys and there were probably 15 people at the stagedoor. The whole cast was very nice and signed and took pictures. Just to warn you, once you get Daniel Reichard talking, he won't stop! Just kidding! I found him to be the friendliest of the cast. It must have taken him 25 minutes just to sign for 10 or so people because he conversed with nearly everyone! The cast is fantastic and everyone is super friendly!
Also, everyone is extremely nice at the Woman in White stage door! Jill Paice is a doll and The rest of the cast is super sweet!
