No she never did a Broadway show but she did star in two films based on Broadway plays:
PORTRAIT IN BLACK based on the play by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts
and
TAKE HER, SHE'S MINE based on the play by Henry and Phoebe Ephron

Have we had another leading man with a voice like his?
John Raitt was an icon. Now he's a legend.
Rest in peace, my friend.

Posted: 2/20/05 at 11:05pmRaitt can also be seen in the TV version of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN opposite Mary Martin. A b&w film of the telecast was accidently sent out to some PBS stations as part of a movie package back around 1986-87. TV guides listed it as the movie (Betty Hutton) but when I tuned in to watch (and tape) a b&w film showing the NBC peacock came on then the pepsi-cola logo heralded the first broadcast since 1957 of this wonderful production. Copies were out for a while on VHS and it is well worth getting if you can find one.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 2/21/05 at 12:50amThis man is just one of the reasons that people don't feel Broadway 'stars' exist today. Rest in peace, and good thoughts and prayers to Bonnie and the rest of his family and friends.

Posted: 2/21/05 at 2:14amJohn Raitt, Ossie Davis, Arthur Miller--great talents who had the great good fortune not only to live long lives but remained active until their final days. I saw John Raitt for the first time when I was seven and he was appearing in Annie Get Your Gun at the LA Civic Light Opera. He was a Broadway talent who didn't need the movies to make him a star, but we are fortunate to have his Sid Sirokin preserved on celuloid in The Pajama Game.

I was watching the documentary "Broadway, The American Musical" last night, the chapter dealing with Rodgers and Hammerstein. It was interesting, and lovely, to hear Mr. Raitt's renditions of If I Loved You and Soliloquy. What a jolt to hear the news this morning that he passed away.
The Heavenly choirs will be singing all that much sweeter now...
My sympathies to his family and friends.

Posted: 2/21/05 at 8:09amfrontrowcenter, I think if the Martin/Raitt ANNIE GET YOUR GUN had unexpectedly turned up on TV while I had a tape running, my heart would have stopped and I'd be up there with Mr. Raitt now.
