Judy Garland was born Francis Gumm and was one of the "
Gumm Sisters" till they decided to change their name to Garland.
Tovah Feldshuh was originally Terri Sue Feldshuh.

Do designers usually change their names. If they do, I do not want to. I should be proud of my name.

i had no idea there was an i and an e in kathi and dawne
Well, Okay, officially it WAS 'Cathy Dawn'.
But in theory she may have had some friends who signed her yearbook that way. And when she saw it, said "yeecccch", and became k. d. from that point on.

Cathy Dawn, what's that flower you have on?
I was thinking of taking the name Fynsworth Dollypoop for my stage name, but then I realized that that was cowardly. So Namo H. Cam it shall remain.
i wouldn't worry about it, bway. i know of a sound designer named mike nichols. i think the actors unions seem to work on a first come first serve basis, but usa is a bit more lenient i think.
all that said, i shall henceforth be known as zebulon aloysius gilhooley.

Namo, have I told you lately that I love you? (And why do I suddenly feel as though there's a county song coming on?)

Ethel Zimmerman -- became Ethel Merman after Irving Berlin told her "never change the way you sing; but you could do something about your name."
... or perhaps it was G. Gershwin who said it. Nevertheless ....
Interestingly enough, Bob Dylan's real last name was also Zimmerman.
Irving Berlin wasn't his real name anyway...it was changed from Israel something or other.

Alexandra Zuck became Sandra Dee. This just about gets the All-Time Worst Name Before a Change award.
Except maybe Marion Morrison who turned into John Wayne.
Barbara Streisand became Barbra ("Just make sure you spell my name wrong.") Streisand so that everyone who she grew up with would know it was her when she became a star.
Mildred Plotka became...
Esther Blodgett became...

It's cool to see all of these people have stage names. Does their family still call them by their real names?

i think Frank SInatra also had a different name. but i cant remember whut it was
I know of an actor who changed his name for the stage and now only wants to be referred to by that new name--even by his family.
My stage name is my full name, which I started going by after high school. There was a guy in hs who had my same first and last name. I kept getting called into the principal's office cuz of stuff he did. "But, I don't have a car--I'm a freshman!"
=)
Sinatras real name was Sinatrone.
Italian-Americans were very prone to stage names: Tony Bennett was Anthony Benedetto, Anne Bancroft was Anna Marie Italiano, Don Ameche was Donato Amici.
William Gaxton was either Italian or Mexican. His name was Arturo Antonio Gaxiola.
God bless Jane Krakowski.

Bernadette Peters is really Bernadette Lazzara (Her mother didn't want her being type cast in only Italian roles).
Stockard Channing is Susan Stockard.
Not a name change, but who doesn't love pointless trivia......Bette Midler was named after Bette (pronounced Betty) Davis; but her mom didn't realize it was supposed to be pronounced as Betty. lol So it's Bette; but you can call her Miss. M
(Slapping head in 'I coulda hada V-8' style): Of course! Bernadette. How could I have forgotten. Her moms theory is interesting, but I somehow doubt Bernadette would get typecast as she's the creamiest-complexioned Siciliana I've ever seen. :)
42nd STREETS composer Harry Warren was Salvatore Anthony Guaragna. Harold Arlen was Hymen Arluck. Irving Berlin was Israhel Bailine.
