Standing Fauxvation

People, look at the number of replies versus number of hits on these boards. Someone other than the regular posters at B/WayWorld are reading the message boards here. Some of them, myself included, have been John Lennon and Beatles fans for decades.

You're bashing a pop icon whose life and music were and are, whether you realize it or not, an inspiration for an entire generation. People have been waiting for "Lennon" to hit B/way for YEARS! They are offering their support for a show that is by far more deserving of a long and successful run than many I've seen, but I make it a rule to support, not bash B/way. If I have nothing good to say, I say nothing at all.

Being an ardent Lennon fan does not make one a shill and I'm tired of hearing that charge being bandied about here so cavalierly.

We're John Lennon fans. Period. As I've said before, if you're a Lennon fan, "Lennon" is an absolute must see.

Please stop trying to ruin it for us.

Hot foot it to The Light in the Piazza to see a genuinely earned ovation to add to the list...

OK. Let us agree to disagree, slacker. It's been an interesting debate.

Shows I have seen recently where I felt an ovation was deserved (some for the performers, some for the shows themselves):

Wicked
Rent
Sweet Charity
Spamalot
Avenue Q
Chicago
Altar Boyz
Chicago
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Honey, when you get old enough to call me sweetheart I'll let you know. If you can still list the shows you've seen, you aren't there yet.

Showbiz, you need an avatar.

Get with the program.

(And I don't mean the 12 step one.)

You just go to "your settings" in the left column and you browse in your computer for some photo, clip art or design you like and plug it in.

That'll get an ovation anyday.

Kiss kiss.

I love the term "standing fauxvation". I've seen many in my life, and I steadily refuse to join them. The worst was at a tour of "Riverdance" which went on about a half-hour after they'd run out of material. The curtain call was ENDLESS, and EVERYONE stood up but me, making it impossible for me to flee!

I've gotten used to them at bad community theatres, etc. There, people are standing to support their friends, relatives, and colleagues who are in the show; it doesn't matter what it is or how bad they are. It is almost impossible, for example, for "The Sound of Music" NOT to get a fauxvation. One must encourage the little brats.

getting an avatar is easy technically. if i can do it--anyone can. deciding what to put up is another matter. i have an identity crisis every time i have to choose a font in microsoft word (who am i and what do i want to say?) so image selection took ages for me. luckily, we can change around so i dodged the commitment-phobia bullet. good luck!!

people really do stand too easily these days.
the worst, however is when you attend tapings of The Tonight Show. there is a warm-up guy that gets you on your feet by tossing t-shirts and swag into the audience. people are on their feet screaming out for him to throw stuff at them and then suddenly you hear "it's the tonight show starring Jaaaaaay leno!" and he comes bounding out to what looks like a frenzied standing ovation. ugh.

Mind is Mantra.

Yet more evidence that ovations come much too easily these days--last night I went to a production of "Nunsense", and everyone stood up instantly. For "Nunsense". It was a very good production, but COME ON. How many of you could see yourselves standing up for "Nunsense", even if it was the best production of that show ever staged?
