Standing ovation in the middle of the show?

The last time the Goddess Carol Channing revived DOLLY!, she received FIVE standing ovations at each performance: on her entrance, after the PARADE, when she appeared at the top of the staircase, at the end of the DOLLY! number, and at curtain calls.

I really miss HELLO, DOLLY!

I travelled from the UK to see her do that last 'Dolly' at the Lunt-Fontanne and she deserved every second of every ovation. Her end of show chat with the audience was hilarious. its a shame the production didnt get to London as was planned. Well worth the trip to NY tho. Yep, Dolly is sorely missed Dolly

DollyPop and WickedBoy, when I first saw Miss Channing do DOLLY she indeed got the five standing ovations mentioned. Of course, back in those days, she also had Charles Lowe in the back of the house leading the screaming and clapping. But no matter -- she deserved every one!

The only mid-show standing ovations I've ever seen were for Jennifer Holliday's "And I Am Telling That I'm Not Going" in DREAMGIRLS(actually mid-song) and for Ethel Merman (several) in HELLO, DOLLY!

I've been in the theatre for the following pre curtain call standing ovations:

Angela Lansbury (Gypsy) Rose's Turn

Cast (Beauty and the Beast) Be Our Guest - closing performance

Carol Channing (Dolly) - yes 5 times as previously mentioned in a single performance

Just incase you guys fancy a trip to London, Ms Channing is bringing her one woman show to the West End either in October or March, we are stil in talks with her reps. it will be a kind of 'An Audience With..' performance. I'll post definate details when its confirmed here.

Carol's one-woman show is an absolute delight. I've seen it several times.--yes, she does "Hello, dolly!", "Before The Parade pases By" and "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" among others.

I saw Carol in her revival of Hello, Dolly! in it's run to broadway, and just seeing her descend the staircase filled me with such joy and brought tears to my eyes. Heh, I'm such a sap. I'm all misty-eyed again just thinking about it.

I'm not surprised that she'd get at least 2 ovations at each performance.

When I saw Bernadette in concert she got a few people standing after Not a Day Goes By.

The only time I've ever seen a standing ovation in the middle of a show is when I saw a community theatre production of Grease last summer. After one and a half lackluster acts, The teen angel brought the house down and recieved a well deserved standing ovation.

There have been a couple times when I saw Standing Ovations during a show.

Smokey Joe's Cafe-- when BJ Crosby sang the reprise (slow version) of Fools Fall in Love... the place was packed as they had just been nominated for the tonys and people where treating the song like another "And I am Telling You"

Jekyll and Hyde -- opening night in sacramento. Technically it was at the end of Act One. Linda Eder sang Someone Like You and audience went ape crazy.

CHESS -- also in Sacramento when Judy McLane and Marcia Mitzman (reprising her role of Svetlana) sang I Know Him So Well when it first played Music Circus.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

I came VERY close to standing after "Old Maid" at 110's closing performance. Since it led into intermission I dont think it would have bothered anyone, but I decided not to take the risk and ruin the experience for myself.

In may, 1997, I saw RENT - original cast, just after the Tony nominations had been announced. When the cast walked out on stage at teh top of Act 2 to sing "Seasons of Love", the audience gave them a standing ovation before the music started.

Given the ear-splitting screams at RENT last night, I'm surprised there wasn't one just for them walking on stage. I mean, I adore Adam and Anthony and was super excited to see them live on stage, but it was a little wild last night.

Since last August, each time I've gone to Jersey Boys since then, I give whoever is in as Frankie which has been either JLY or Michael a standing ovation after Can't Take My Eyes Off You.

At The Boy From Oz's final performance right at the beginning, Hugh Jackman received a standing ovation. He just walked on and the lights came on and there he was at the piano and basically everyone got up and gave him a standing ovation.

I saw Ebersole get a standing ovation when she walked through the door as Little Edie at the top of the second act back when it was at Playwrights.

Also, as mention, after LuPone's "Rose's Turn".

Also, when is it alright to scream / clap?

clap: After a song is always OK. At the end of an act is always OK. At the end of scene is sometimes OK, if the scene was extra good and if it doesn't interrupt the flow. After a funny line is Ok if the line is super funny and super well delivered.

scream: Never. Ever. Please.

One performance of Jersey Boys I was at, one person a row or so behind me tried to start a standing ovation for Chris Jones' "Can't Take..." but no one played along. Awww...

Well, you could've played along.

At least 3 times, John Lithgow and Norbert Leo Butz received a standing ovation after "Dirty Rotten Number." I'm trying to remember if it ever happened when Pryce took over....maybe at his and Norbert's last performance...

I actually very much disagree about standing ovations at curtain calls, they happen at almost every show I go too. Sure, it's nice for the actors to receive them, but when they start happening all the time, they start to lose any meaning (or I think so).

And in terms of clapping and stuff...it kills me when people start clapping before a song is over...whether an actor is holding a long note that the clapping interrupts, or some songs have beautiful instrumental endings that you never get to hear because people start clapping. Quite a few in Miss Saigon off the top of my head.

The last time I personally witnessed a standing ovation during the middle of a show (though this circumstance was towards the end) was after "I'm Here" when I saw LaChanze as Celie in "The Color Purple."

It was a beautiful and powerful moment in the show that warranted its enthusiastic reception.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

I agree with this 100 percent.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

i, too, don't like standing ovations for every show..i only stand if i felt it deserved it..even if i am the only one sitting. and i hate hate HATE when peopel clap in the middle of a song! we pay to hear the song! not hear clapping over the song!

i saw Jennifer Holliday in Dreamgirls last week in atlanta and people clapped through the ENTIRE SONG with "and i am telling you i'm not going..." sooo annoying...she also got a standing ovation. i guess she is still getting them standing after all these years!!!
