If they wrote a score together (both writing music & lyrics) how do you think it would sound?
I think it would be frickin' brilliant. Though both usually write solo, but think they'd be an amazing pair.
Any thoughts?

I think Sondheim should write the lyrics and let Yeston write the music
But I think both are amazing composers and lyricists.

Has Sondheim ever let someone else write his lyrics? When he was young he swallowed his pride and agreed to write lyrics under the likes of Leonard Bernstein and Richard Rodgers, but once his career was fully underway he always did both, as far as I remember.

Yeston is by far a better composer. Sondheim's lyrics have always been better than his music.
Sondheim's music really moves me. I think it's just incredible. I hate the Sondheim isn't melodic syndrome.
But why is this becoming a who's the better composer thread.
Can we answer the damn question?
I'd think they'd be a great mix together.

I wouldn't think it'd work.

Sondheim wrote music with a lyricist named Shakespeare in "The Frogs."
I think they could do great work together. After all, Maury Yeston and Tommy Tune were probably conscious of COMPANY when they were working together on NINE. Not to say, that they were copying the show, but Yeston's portrayal of Guido as well as the way his music was used in the show seemed to have been influenced by the Sondheim shows.
They also both know how to write great showstopping songs for the females. They could've written a great SUNSET BLVD. musical, and I believe if Sondheim and Yeston had worked together on GRAND HOTEl, the show could've been even better than it is now (and I love GRAND HOTEL as it stands). Either way, sounds like an intriguing idea that will never happen.

A little O/T but I'm imagining what a Sondheim "Titanic" would be like

" imagining what a Sondheim "Titanic" would be like"
In a word: wordy.
Sondheim wrote music with a lyricist named Shakespeare in "The Frogs." ...
Really? Never heard of him!

We get it, you don't think Sondheim is as great as everyone says he is :P Besides, isn't Yeston a pretty wordy lyricist as well?
I don't think they need to work together. I wouldn't mind if they both worked more. Yeston, at least... Sondheim's getting up there.
I thought Yeston was a girl for the longest time. I was kind of disappointed when I found out he was a boy.
Hey - Fenchurch - you can't use my quote if you are going to bash Sondheim. You know he is God on earth and always will be - so:
Fenchurch is correct, as usual, except when he disses Mr. Sondheim.

Wow. I've NEVER been able to like Yeston--particularly his repetitive lyrics I have to say--they seem light years apart in terms of talent
^ I think NINE's score is pretty damn brilliant. I don't think his lyrics are as genius as Sondheim.. but they're pretty damn good.
