According to Jim Hill Media, Josh Strickland may be leaving Tarzan than he originally planned. For those of you who dont know, Jim Hill is a insider with many connections to Disney executives in the know and he has been covering Tarzan for a while now. He says that a Disney plan to try and boost sales in order to salvage Tarzan would be to buy up Strickland's contract and replace him with a bankable male celebrity. I think this will depend on how well it continues to sell, but I though it was an interesting article from a very reliable source.

I have an idea.
Why not have the Governor of California and Strickland switch jobs?
The cast is the only thing that makes Tarzan bearable. Leave them alone.

Posted: 5/12/06 at 4:42pmI really doubt that Disney will close a 20 million dollar show because of some bad reviews. I think a celebrity would help ticket sales, but it depends on if these reviews really cause sales to drop in the long run.

Posted: 5/12/06 at 4:45pmWell, it had a large advance, but the advance doesn't really mean much. People may stop being interested in it in a couple of weeks. Now that images and videos are out there of the show.

Posted: 5/12/06 at 4:47pmDisney's not going to close it because of bad reviews -- and because it's Disney, I don't think it's terribly likely that people are going to decide not to see it because of bad reviews.

Posted: 5/12/06 at 4:48pmIt wouldnt solve them, but dont you think a celebrity would help fill seats? I mean, Disney could care less if it is a quality product or not, they just want to make sure they are still bringing in the money. They could have the greatest piece of art ever to grace Broadway but if it was lagging in sales, Disney would axe it right away.

Posted: 5/12/06 at 4:49pmIF they weren't worried about the show flopping, why would they try to replace the leading man?
#14re: Strickland may be dropped from Tarzan sooner than later...
Posted: 5/12/06 at 5:18pmif they want to make changes to prevent it from being a flop, the last place to go is the cast. they are all excellent. the lighting is excellent. the sets aren't what you expect, but they work fine. the songs aren't bad... just a few need to be tweaked. if they're going to start anywhere, make it the book. that was the major weakness i saw. some of the scenes just could have been better if that was changed. rework Jane's first scene because it's too much and could have been done better. but there's no reason to go for cast changes. Josh is great in the role and deserves the great comments he has been given from those that have seen it.

If my office is any indication:
Many people read the reivews of Lestat, The Wedding Singer, and Hot Feet and have decided to save their money.
These same people, read the reivews of Tarzan and said "It can't be that bad" and are going to see it anyway.
Disney sells. Period.

WithoutATrace, that doesn't say anything particularly intelligent about the people in your office.
If you can't see something and make up your own mind, what point is there to having a mind at all? :)

Why have critics then?
And it seems the people in his office DID make a choice by seeing Tarzan - which got bad reviews as well.
Ignoring the critics is a much more intelligent thing to do than to listen to them.

i agree... make your own decisions

Agreed, agreed, agreed.
Do I think shows like Wedding Singer and Lestat are the greatest things in the world? No.
Am I glad I went to them? Absolutely.

Look, if I've got 100 bucks of my hard-earned money to drop on a show, you can bet I'm going to find out which one deserves my time and my money. If the critics roundly pan something it isn't likely going to be that show. It's not that I can't make up my own mind about things or that I explicitly trust the critics, it's that I've got to prioritize.
That having been said, the critics could have said nothing but evil about Piazza and I still would have seen it half a dozen times because I love Guettel's work. I suspect withoutatrace's coworkers have the same kind of faith in Disney.

They shouldn't drop Josh. He's a fantastic Tarzan.
The show will make money as is. Leave it alone.

Josh is fantastic as Tarzan, there's no need to even begin speculating about replacements. Jim Hill is always full of crap, trying to start issues and raise problems where there are none.
Josh deserves a long run as Tarzan and a lot of credit for his work. He has a beautiful voice, great acting chops, and is a pleasure to watch. I wish him much luck in the role, and hope he can give Jim Hill media and all the critics a big f*** you as the show continues to sell out and be a success.

Posted: 5/12/06 at 5:57pmMost of the people in my office go to maybe 2-3 Broadway shows per year. They do not care about seeing everything, like I do. I guess they, like most tourists, are looking for spectacle over content (not that Lestat or Wedding Singer have good content). I'm sure most of them will LOVE Tarzan.
