Hello. Kind of a random but important question.I'm going with my school in a few weeks to NYC and I am peeling off from the group to go see Cabaret at eight o'clock but the tour bus leaves at 9 and I will still be at the show. Our Hotel is in Jersey on 36 Valley Road NJ. How would I get back cheaply?(without using a taxi) Thank you so much!

You can take a bus, check NJTransit.com
However I don't know if this would get you directly infront of your hotel.
What TOWN in NJ?
But on 2nd thought: If you call the hotel, they'll be able to tell you pretty simply.

The hotel is in Clark, NJ. You need to call NJ Transit to see if there is a bus that goes from Port Authority 42nd street to Clark at that late hour.

In relation to the title of the thread, you can't take the subway to New Jersey.
NJ Transit bus 112 runs from Port Authority to Clark, and it looks like the last one leaves New York at 11:35pm (on weekdays AND Saturdays). Here is the schedule, though I have no idea where this would drop you off in relation to your hotel. I would second calling the hotel and asking.

By any chance will anyone in your group have a car or are you traveling by bus the entire time? I grew up in the town next to Clark, you can take the North East Corridor NJ Transit train from Penn Station to Metropark station and have someone pick you up there if they have a car, or take a cab from there. The train ride will be $10 one way and the cab ride wont be more than 15-20 minutes max. Catching that 11:35 bus might not be doable after CABARET but the train is doable.

You can take the subway to NJ. It's call the PATH. It goes to Jersey City, Hoboken, Harrison, and Newark in New Jersey.

Questions like this are what google is for. it will lay out all your transit options on one page, with all the detail anyone could want. It looks like a half mile walk back to the hotel from the bus-not bad but remember that walking a half mile in a town in NJ is not like walking a half mile on a street in Manhattan. It could be desolate and could involve roads without sidewalks. Best to check and probably best to take a taxi from the train in any case.
