Does anyone have any openings they would like to see?

This was suggested in a thread:

I rather them open with a couple of young performers singing "Let Me Entertain You" and have LuPone walk down the aisles of Radio City screaming "Sing out, Louise!" Now THAT'S a way to open a ceremony.

I added instead of Patti, Whoopi should do it. Updated On: 5/29/08 at 05:19 PM

I always thought "There You Are" from Edwin Drood would make a fantastic opening. It's a great song that celebrates theatre, and a rousing opener. And for the part where they go out to actors in the audience, the actors can be Broadway Celebs.

I hope Whoopi wears A LOT of costumes, like she did when she hosted the oscars the year of Moulin Rouge.

PLEASE! Do not post anything negative or dramatic! DidYouReallyHearMe has LOST the ability to ignore such posts and he will comment! Please, help him.

With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-

I love the Whoopi "Let Me Entertain You" idea! I wouldn't be surprised if they do it.

"If My Friends Could See Me Now" would make a great opening for the Tony's. Or "Lullaby of Broadway".

I loved the One Night Only number from a few years back.

And Roseaddams, that had me laughing for a while.

I'd love to see Patti sing "Everything's Coming Up Roses" then have the last "for you" transition into Kerry Butler singing "Magic" from Xanadu and so and so forth for all the nominees.

Easy, right?

I think that Whoopi should be singing and Patti walks down the asiles and says "Sing out Whoopi" or the other way around...that would give me a good laugh...

I think Patti should start singing a song probablly "Coming Up Roses" and Whoopi going Sing out PATTI! in Patti's full opening costume as she comes charging up the stage. Whoopi " Let me show you how it is done signaling to the wings where the rest of the New musical cast are waiting they come out and sing the song along with Whoopi with Patti looking on sobbing. Whoopi then does her intro speech while taking off the costume to reveal her dress.

It'll be Circle of Life.
Sadly, the theater world does not revolve around Gypsy.

Sad. I was hoping for an exciting opening number - Circle of Crap.

It makes sense what did you expect Lion King to sing which would be just way to out of nowhere anywhere but the opening.

So that was so jumbled, I mean't of course they'll sing "Circle" which would be really out of place anywhere else I mean huge animals coming through the house.

Circle of Crap is out of place at anytime during MY Tony telecast. Hmph! What a nerve!

My question is - is including these two performances really going to boost ratings that much? Sure, Rent and Lion King are more popular, but in the age of YouTube and with the Rent movie out there with most of the original cast, people can just watch these things from their computer. They need to find ways to better market the show besides throwing in some numbers from popular shows.

Maybe Julie Taymor will do a bigger opening for CIRCLE OF LIFE... Like when they did Do You Hear The People Sing? On the Les Miz 10th Anniversary Concert.... That would be cool. Like have as many cast members from around the world performing....
That might be cool

I still get chills when I see the perfromance from the year it won.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."
