Sunday Matinee Help

We're coming to NY for a few days over Jun 25/26 weekend. We already have Something Rotten booked and am looking possibly for one more as a Sunday matinee. Based on the below, what do you recommend? AS an idea the kind of shows I like, my top favorites are Mamma Mia, Wicked, Rent, Book of Mormon...something that is fun with catchy music.

Act of God (not a musical but my husband and I like Sean Hayes)
Waitress
Bright Star (not sure this is my thing but I know it's talked highly on here)
School of Rock
other suggestion?

AS a related question, for the above musicals, do you suggest buying now or waiting to try and get discount? I paid quite a lot for Something Rotten so was going to wait but I also like to sit near the stage.

My vote is for bright star! My third visit will be this Sunday! I adore the score and the show is so heartfelt. I cried so much even though I knew what was coming! Sad tears, happy tears... My heart felt so full after. It is a sentimental love story for sure, but if you like those, give it a go!

You can definitely get good discounts for the cheap seats ahead of time and should be able to get good seats by TKTS at half price. That's the best way to do good seats as it's cheaper than the discount codes. (And unless the Tonys change things dramatically you should get good seats...)

Thanks for the replies. I ended up listening to parts of the 3 musicals on iTunes and Waitress seemed the catchiest (I'm not a fan of blue grass). And since I like to sit close up, I ended up just buying tickets online rather than waiting and trying for discount (no discount codes online for our dates). So much for not paying $$$ for two shows. (We're Canadian so there is a conversion ontop of the cost).

Anyone seen Waitress? If so, what did you think?

There are other threads on Waitress. As you can imagine, opinions vary. I saw it in boston, and liked it, but didn't love it. Jessie Mueller is worth the price of admission.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Based on your preferences I would have suggested either Waitress or School of Rock, and personally loved Waitress. It's a definitely a catchy show with some great performances and a cute, entertaining and emotional show. Just don't expect it to be as showy and glitzy as Wicked, Mamma Mia ect. It's has a rather subdued set and effects. The focus is on the story and the music, not so much the presentation.

Thanks. I figure it's a different kind of show from Wicked , but it seems enjoyable with catchy music. I have 2 weeks to get to know the music better (which for me, helps enjoy the show)

I think I remember you when you were planning a trip with your kids last year to Matilda. Not sure if the kids are here for this trip. I will say about Waitress is that it's charming, the performers are excellent, the music is often catchy, and the overall package is well done. That said, it's difficult IMO to write a musical comedy about spousal abuse and extra marital affairs as main themes - so I would consider it to be a very adult mature show at its heart.

Yes, wow good memory. We were here in August with our kids and ended up seeing Matilda. We loved it. In fact, my daughter and I are going again in our home city as it's on tour this summer.

This time it's just my husband and I (our anniversary), so it's ok if it's more mature theme. Yeah, if it’s a story about abuse, then it's hard to make it a comedy or light hearted.

For me it worked much better in this show than in Bridges of Madison County as far as the extra marital affairs go. I was rooting for Jenna more than for Francesca.

Happy we ended up buying tickets for Waitress. The performance at the Tony's was amazing.

Having said that, I think we would have been just as happy with School of Rock. It looks like a fun one too.

Bright Star...I know it does really well, but totally not my thing. I tried to like it, and although a great performance, not for me.

Act of God...well, that would have just been to see Sean Hayes.
