Sunday Projections w/ Understudies?

I was just listening to the London cast recording of the Menier production that transfered to Broadway and wondering - there are many projections including images of Daniel Evans, who played George. What would have happened if/when Santino Fontana, his understudy, went on? Did they have a different set of projections?

A little pedantic, I know, but SITPWG wasn't a donmar production, it was the menier chocolate factory, another small london fringe theatre. I kinda think of it as the donmar for musicals (although both of the two do both plays and musical, and each one does both well, it's just the menier tends to do more musicals, and the donmar does more plays.)

It wouldn't shock me if they had to have projections of the understudy. I mean, when they do voice overs in shows equity is picky about how they have to be the same voice of the performer on stage.

I know that projections and voice overs are two different things but still.

The Menier alternates between plays and musicals, so really it's about even. But I don't think it has yet sent a play into the West End, whereas the musicals just keep giving. :)

Donmar does MANY more plays but isn't averse to putting on a musical once in a while.

But then again there were plenty of times when the RENT projections didn't match actors onstage.

The RENT projections were neither as frequent nor as pivotal.

Yes, but if Equity had strict rules on it than I think they would have been more accurate.

In Grey Gardens they had Maureen Moore record "The Girl Who Has Everything" for the opening record just as Ebersole had.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had a second set of projections.

I attended a post-show discussion with Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell for XM Radio and Daniel Evans said that they did record projections of his understudy in case he did have to go on.

Great topic. I always wondered about the projections used in The History Boys which clearly showed the actors and were used to advance the plot (slightly) during scene changes.

I know for example that Frances De La Tour wasn't with the show for all of the stops around the world. Would they have used alternate footage of the actress playing her role? Interesting to think about having to plan for such occasions.

well I know for the Producers they had different projections for "That Face" for all of the understudies .

Rent's projections at the end usually had 2 versions one of the full principal cast (usually changed out after major cast changes) and one of the cast and the understudies (updated much less often) whereas it would be incredibly difficult to shoot that many sets of group footage
