Gothampc - the 85/90 % return is from a NY Times article that ran in March 97 the day after Sunset closed.
If you look on the Broadway Grosses you can see the week by week history for Sunset - for the most part it was above it's break even point (600,000 a week) for all of Glenn Close's run and most of Betty Buckley. Once Paige came in, things started to tank quickly
I saw the show 8 times with all of the Norma's - saw it when there was standing room and lines at the door looking for cancellations - and times that werent (even saw it on Closing Night)
Looking forward to the revival!
PS - The 2nd US Tour with Petula Clark is often wrtiten off - she did an amazing job, and the sets, the direction and slight revisions they did made the show even more effective - and cost efficient!

WOMAN IN WHITE is not too different from PASSION - a period drama of unrequited love, with the woman playing the central role. I really liked the musical scores from both shows. Interestingly, Maria Friedman played Fosca in London, to great acclaim, and Michael Ball played the role of Giorgio also to good reviews. Maria and Michael were also central in the casting of WOMAN IN WHITE on Broadway, in the roles of Marion and Fosco - and they also received good reviews from the critics.
Well, they are quite different. THE WOMAN IN WHITE blows. PASSION is brilliant.
BOTTOM LINE...
SUNSET BLVD is the WORST Best Musical EVER. (IMHO)
I never wanted my money back after a show like I did after sitting through that interminable evening.
Sunset remains one of my ALW's favorites. I really like the score, since it evokes the period so well, at least for me.
However, it all depends who plays Norma. I haven't seen the show on stage, but all the major recordings were fine (Patti being the best). Glenn just ruined the whole thing for me.
Sunset is a great show(and i hate most ALW shows with a pssion)
I dont care about the crap what went on with the actors etc the fact is the show was well written and well staged(buckley was great in that role)
The uk touring production featured an actress called faith brown who also did a great job.
I love the movie. The lyrics to the show are terrible, but the score is sweeping and very emotive.
I haven't seen the show live, but based on the recordings, it was, as Margo explained, a pale shadow to the original.

A little OT, but does anyone have pics of the car chase, sets on top of each other, or any other sets? Because I heard it was amazing.

I would have loved to see the show with Buckley the most, followed by Close. The two seem like they are the most appropriate for it and Betty must have been fantastic to see.
I just learned that there were no actresses nominated for a best leading actress in a musical Tony in 1985. Were there no eligible actresses at all?

"Considering they spent 100's of thousands of dollars on the Car for the paramount scene (for all of about 30 seconds it was onstage) - extravagant is too kind a word."
Pics?
I believe that was the year the Best Actress and Best Actor in a musical categories were eliminated since it was such a weak season.
I don’t know why people give Glen Close so much criticism. I’ve seen videos of hear doing the role, and she is able to handle the score. I don’t think there is any doubt that she can act. I prefer Patti in the role, but give Glen Close some credit.

'85 was a particularly bad year, with only one hit musical (Big River). There were a couple of very short-lived flops (Harrigan n Hart, Quilters, revivals of Take Me Along and A Three Musketeers), the Hal Prince misfire Grind and a limited engagement of King & I. Bottom line there wasn't much for the Tonys to nominate, let alone award which is why they eliminated categories.
But there was still four nominees for Best Male. Isn't Leader of the Pack (which came out that year) a very female dense show?
