Where was there a witch in Sunset Boulevard?

I am putting together a DVD. I have 20 minutes DONE and I was shocked. It was like I was back in 1995 seeing the show for the first time. I am looking for anybody who has any footage from the play. Yes bootlegs. Updated On: 11/17/07 at 04:32 PM

If you're mail and have the DVD of the original, that tells the story right there. Now that my mind is on it, think I'll play tonight.

I am from the UK, so my political ideologies may be different, but from (I am presuming) the only neo-con, G.W. Bush supporting, non-American, Sunset Blvd obsessee on any message board, I can quite safely say that Sunset is definitely NOT gay.
I have nothing against homosexuality, in a fact that may differ from my fellow neo-cons, but as I have repeatedly said...and any former Blvd forum members will testify to, I am not gay myself and it infuriates me when musical theatre is associated with a particular stereotype. Businessmen and lawyers can be socialists, so why can't musical fans be conservative?
As for the origin of Sunset, the movie may be idolised by fans of DW Griffith or Michael Moore alike for it's unique take on the post-talkie and all the stars that were forever lost or forgotten because of the arrival of sound. In that case, one thinks of the status quo in which Pola Negri, Rudy Valentino, the Fairbanks', Gloria Swanson and Lon Chaney reigned supreme. How many of those would be recognised by your average, run-of-the-mill movie punter nowadays? Surely, Wilder's original film is one of the most (through it's inevitable sympathies with Norma) conservative Hollywood films of the pre-60's Brat=pack era?
However, ideologies and political debates aside I would just like to officially register my disagreement with the (quite frankly hetero-phobic) remarks that Sunset Blvd, Lloyd Webber's best score since Aspects is reserved only for gays.
Simon
Box Office... I have the Sunset recordings of : Miss Patti, Glennis (I don't listen to it.. unless I'm a masochist and want to torture myself), Petula Clark, Faith Brown (British Tour Norma), Diahann Carroll (call her Miss Carroll), Helen Schneider and Linda Balgord. What does that make me, B.O.? (No comments from the Peanut Gallery.) from RC in Austin, Texas..

"I have nothing against gay people, but just so you know, there ARE straight men out there who are musical theater fans and/or performers. But yes, I know, we're in the minority..."
Virtual high five, dude!!!!!!!!

Simon: Of COURSE, you're right for the most part. You don't have to be GAY to love musicals. There's a s*it load of straight women AND even SOME straight MEN that love musicals! But, dude - Gay OR straight has nothing at ALL to do with being CONSERVATIVE. Once Hillary gets back in the White House she'll make all that perfectly clear.

Of course not, and I would hate it if it did. Politics and sexuality are totally separate. I was highlighting the ridiculous stereotype that had originally been suggested. Just as it is ridiculous to suggest that all conservatives are straight, it is ridiculous to suggest that musical theatre is the realm of gay men.

"Politics and sexuality are totally separate. "
I think I know what you mean ie) the way they vote should be independent of their sexuality. As opposed to importance of politics and sexuality with gay rights over the decades etc...
Yes there are straight men in theatre and who like musical theatre - and it is great to have them around to protect us queens from the nasties outside once we leave the theatre after a performance.
I *think* the O.P. meant Sunset Boulevard the street. I've seen it & agree.

Sunset Blvd. - the original movie = very good, not gay.
Sunset Blvd. the musical - not very good, somewhat gay.
Sunset Blvd. the musical movie (proposed) = very bad idea.
HUSTLER WHITE was the gay SUNSET BOULEVARD. Sheesh, people!

If 'gay' means 'a terrible, monotonous musical,' than yes, Sunset Boulevard is gay.

Actualy simon, given it's time period, it would not surprise me at all if there WERE some sly homosexual references
Possible Spolier:
While there is no homosexual character, there is a major point made that Joe Gillis has become emasculated. The opening scene in his apartment, where he's in the fluffy bathrobe being dressed down by cops and having his car taken from him, for example. On top of this, the way he cowtows (sp?) down to Norma, even going so far as to give up Betty at the end of the film shows his journey into a emasculated male.
In fact, this is discussed in the fantastic documentary "Sex at 24 Frames a Second"
