I agree that the sound mixing for the Kennedy Center felt "subdued." It was the first time seeing the production where I felt disconnected from the stage and the actors. I certainly heard far less sniffles and audible sobs from the audience in the Kennedy Center than any other time I saw the show at the Booth. The Rock aspect of the musical was definitely reduced to a Adult Contemporary sound level at Kennedy.

"The rest of the cast was mostly up to par too, with the exception of the kid playing Gabe... I thought he lacked presence..." Maybe that's a subtle casting decision since Gabe exists only in other character's imaginations. Personally, I found both Curt Hansen (Gabe) and Preston Sadleir (Henry) virtually indistinguishable from each other both physically and vocally. Of course, that may be another conscious casting choice since Henry is supposed to remind Diana of "somebody."

Now she has a shoulder to cry on.

No wonder why Sesame Street's Elmo is so sickenly happy & sweet. It used to be that green was the color of envy and red was the angriest. Unless you're a fictional character then looking green is apparently a nightmare. The Green Goblin, the Grinch, the Wicked Witch, the Great & Powerful Oz, Oscar the Grouch, Shrek... I expect there will one day be musicals devoted in some part to the woes of Green Lantern, Green Hornet, Incredible Hulk and probably even Clue's Mr. Green will belt out a tune ...

It's Broadway on television. There are snickers and sneers? Why do I pretend to be surprised? Frankly, there are at least a dozen other award shows that could stand similar editing and chopping. It's an awards broadcast, let's not behave like it's the second butchering of A Star Is Born.

The threads could go on and on about what aspects of theatre are overlooked by voting committee's and there could be endless debates about the justification or injustice of such omissions (and there probably have been). Personally, I'd like to see some type of sound recording category added (obviously, since I'm creating this post). Perhaps if there was competition for the honor, more cast albums would not only be produced but also released. Then even lesser known flops and obscure production...

If you don't know anything about Caroline O'Connor or dismiss her because she's not famous in your small world, you're missing a lot.

Isn't Doctor Dillamond and the monkeys essentially people in puppet costumes? At least in AQ the actor's facial expressions can be seen.

It's probably unpopular to say but I don't like Jennifer Hudson's singing. She carries on with the habit most of today's pop diva's have - wailing. Instead of studying the quiet, intricate nuance's of a song, she, like her contemporaries, wail and belt through it. I would like her more if she toned it down. It's the same reason that I can't appreciate Aretha Franklin but it's kept her career going all these years so what's my opinion worth.

I *think* the O.P. meant Sunset Boulevard the street. I've seen it & agree.

Parrot. The words of the song are beyond her comprehension. Like Streisand. Sounds all right, but where's the believable delivery? Has Babs ever had rain on her parade? So too I doubt that youtube girl has ever woken 'up tomorrow morning' and found her lover not there.
