"In order to close a show the producers HAVE to post a closing notice at least one week in advance backstage"
Which was not the case with last year's "The Normal Heart" at the Public. It was all set to make its move to Broadway, and according to notices, was playing its final weeks at the Public before making the transition. It was a Tuesday night that I decided at the last minute to see the show, and that same night I had found out that the actor's, right before going onstage, had been told that this would be their last performance. The show ended so abrubptly, not only was it a surprise to audiences, but the actor's as well. And that night, they gave outstanding performances. I consider myself lucky, making a last minute decision to see it on that night.
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive.
"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.
