Sam Mendes is expected to direct. Kevin Kline was rumored to star as Sweeney.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

No - he's not confirmed to direct. His company IS producing, but when I spoke with the secretary last, she said he didn't know if he would be able to direct or not. This was two months ago.

Actually, there have been MANY rumers as far as Sweeney, the most prominant of which is Russell Crowe. Reportedly, he has even been sent a copy of the screen play (which according to Sondheim, is fairly impressive). Given recent events, he might have the hot head to do it! :)

Mendes is all but set. The only thing pending is an official announcement. Sondheim and Mendes both want Russell Crowe and Meryl Streep apparently has her eye on Mrs. Lovett. So I imagine the project will come together accordingly.

Now that Russell Crowe is being sued for his hotel incident, I wonder if that will affect movie roles.

http://www.nydailynews.com/06-28-2005/news/gossip/story/323156p-276233c.html

>"Cinderella Man" star Russell Crowe is expected to get hammered this week with a massive lawsuit that will provide a blow-by-blow account of his alleged June 6 telephone rage assault against a downtown hotel clerk.

The suit will charge that Crowe hurled a ceramic bowl at Mercer Hotel clerk Nestor (Josh) Estrada after hitting the 28-year-old Brooklyn man in the face with a thrown phone - an attack captured on video, according to sources familiar with the incident.<<

Ugh, I hate Russell Crowe. I don't know, I can't see Sweeney working as a musical movie. It's just, too operatic or something.

Now, I know this would never, EVER happen, but I always thought it was a cool idea. What would you think of Sweeney Todd as a cartoon musical, not like Disney, but for adults and really dark. I don't know, I just think it could be brilliant if done well. I might be going crazy, but I just see it as being more realistic.

Well I was having lunch with Stephen the other day and he was extremely excited about Sam Mendes doing this movie. He wants Crowe to star and Streep as Lovett.

Anyone but Russel!! For now, that is. I don't know unless he can sing. (But if he can't, then he can always be dubbed by George Hearn or someone else like that.)
