I wish SOOO BADLY I could go!!!! Main reason to see D'Am. I hope she knows all the positive things that are being said about her. And all the support.

I'm seeing it it the 2nd week of May. It's the first show I can remember where I actually want the Lead to be out, so I can see the standby.

I'm dreading this production, mostly because the original staging was so perfect, but am curious how they are going to try to pull this thing off without Fosse's crucial vision.

bobbybuddy..

You are "dreading this production"??? Why are you seeing it?? So you can bash it on this board? Well, I guess I know a review I won't take into consideration...yours!!

I don't think I've ever went out and bought tickets to go see a production I was "dreading"!!! Has anyone? Why????

Justme2,

Number One, it is my opinion. 2, I am dreading it, but as a lover of Sweet Charity I must go see it, to see how it can survive (or not) without it's original staging (though it has been revived, it has only been with Fosse's work intact.)

Wayne Cilento has a shady reputation as a choreographer, and I am dreading his contributions, honestly. There is enough about it that makes me want to see it (my love for the original, much of the cast).

And if you don't want to read or take my review for value fine. But I do have a history with the show, know it very well, and all that. So at the very least, my review will be educated.

Perhaps you can ask me questions without lashing out or trying to make me feel like a big ass. Thanks.

I personally think that this show can't survive without its original Fosse staging, but that's just me. I think putting Big Spender at the top of the show makes the show about an idea (prostitution, which the show isn't at all about) rather than about Charity, as it probably should be. If a real director/Choreogrpaher like Stroman or Danielle got their hands on the property, things may be a bit more hopeful. But it is to be noted that both Bobbie and Cilento, while they have had some success, have a bad track record to date.

And besides, I am sure people out there have gone to shows, just to see a trainwreck. Dance of the Vampires, Carrie, Dracula, and many more, I am positive have been attended by people who want to see a big ol' train crash and burn.

I don't wish this production of Charity any harm, but the hype around it and all the gossip and facts, have been absurd and dishy, but I will try, to see the show with an open mind, but it seems that the Weissler's and their spectacle around them, have made that extremely difficult.

No one is trying to make you look like an ass; I am merely asking why you are going to see a show you are "dreading". If I gave offense, I apologize. Here are some of my thoughts on the subject:

If you are not happy about Cilento choreographing, then don't see the show. Or see it and THEN judge his work. It's not right to judge someone's work based on other shows; each show is a world unto it's own.

I can appreciate that you are educated about the original Charity, sure, I can accept that, and even congraulate you for enjoying a stellar piece of theater. But to come out and say in advance how you think a show will fail or, as you put it, crash and burn, how can you expect anyone to turn around and believe that your review of THIS production is even fair?

And, for the record, I agree with you about Cilento and have my reservations as well. I can't agree with your assessment of Bobbie, however. This director's "track record" is not bad. I won't even count Chicago here. He's done tons of Encores work, White Christmas is a stunning show that you shouldn't miss, and I enjoyed Twentieth Century, Tenderloin, Firello, Compleat Female Stage Beauty, and am looking forward to the Carousal concert he is directing this June at Lincoln Center. I'll leave Footloose alone, as though I didn't see the show, others did, it ran for 2 years on Broadway and toured after that, so that can't be counted as "bad track record".

I'll be giving this show a shot and won't judge it or the creative team before I see it. You should try to as well. Who knows? It may suck and I'll be joining in with you on your opinion. AFTER I've seen it, however.

Ok, I just finished reading them as well. It seems to me that the show is getting reviewed two ways:

A) it's not Fosse choreography, how dare they attempt to do this
B) I am happy to see a fresh take on this material.

Overall, more positive than negative, at this point...I can't wait to see the show myself!

That one review of there is weird, say they like it at the beginning and end, but does nothing in between for paragraphs on end but complain about the show. Who knows! I would love to see it with Charlotte, but with all the other shows this year, I dont have the $ to dish out not to see the gal who is going to be up for a Tony. Though I wish her much luck in the role.

The one thing the 3 reviews did point out is that the show still has some major fixing needing to take place in several areas, hopefully it will happen. Can't say Im not skeptical.
