"Smartly written and powered by a trio of top-notch actors, it’s the first laugh-out-loud comedy of the fall season." - Theatermania

These reviews seem pretty positive.

These reviews are very kind.

Our group found this basic rom com writing.  The writing and direction are elevated significantly by the performances.   This will play well in community, small regional and college learning theaters showcasing strong black performers.  We were surprised this was considered good enough for production from MCC.

Young and cast are doing great work.  The writing is & ideas have been done before including the idea of relationships in "review view" etc. The writer found it more important and deep than what's on page?.  Young does a toned down version of Purlie mixed with her modern Clyde's.   Rishawn is a gem.  Cast elevates writing significantly and direction, which could use smarter transitions.  Did director work w set designer?

It's an okay night but a skip, for the price, unless you enjoy the performers. Broadway?  No.   Hoped for more than a made for tv movie rom-com story centered around our black relationships.  Important story to be out there but seemed black story for white audience approval.   The Tyler Perry script that got shelved.

Interesting that most of the critics and friends that I know that have seen it don't agree with you. They are enjoying the show for what it is and not what they "hoped" for.

The critics are mixed like our group.

We hoped for more and didn't care for it, for what it is. It’s fine.  With such a great cast, suprising the material and production was just okay.

Actually the critics aren't mixed, they are much more positive than anything.  I remember you now. You're the one who came on this board and tried to trash this play before having even seen it. You weren't going to like it because you already had pre-conceived opinions before walking in the door.

They are mixed.  Yes, really wanted to see a great black-centered show.  We were wary after the undercooked Chicken & Biscuits but hopeful considering the performers in choosing to do it.   Unfortunately this was not for us either but listed many of its positive qualities.  That's fair and also unfortunate, for us only.  It's an opinion.  Nothing was "pre-conceived' or "trashed" nor are we the only people who feel this way according to prior responses and others we know seeing it.

Awfully questionable considering your more recent joining the board, starting the post, posting of positive review and defense of this play.  You must work on the show or around it?  It's a fine enough sit-com rom com play with great performances it just felt first draft with incomplete direction. An opinion.  Troll elsewhere.

sinister teashop said: "I think MCC disgraced itself when it cut ties with its long term playwright in residence Neil LaBute in 2018. LaBute’s brand of perversity had become too much of a liability for the leadership. I’ve never been a fan of LaBute’s provocations but when those provocations become less darling and much more risky is exactly when a theater needs to stand by its writers. MCC failed amajor test of integrity."

LaBute’s work was not why MCC cut ties with him. And, if you notice, his work isn’t being done anywhere else in the city, either. Theatre companies don’t abruptly sever a 15 year relationship with a playwright and cancel an announced production of their new play because they suddenly decide the writer isn’t PC. Read between the lines here.

Fascinating that I'm the troll when you had to shut down another thread about this show because I called you out for YOUR trolling - which you continue to do here. I joined the board last year, didn't know the timeline had to be approved by you. If Lyons' work is not for you, why do you go see it? Only to come on here and complain about. Don't like it, that's your opinion. But we get your point.  You've made it. You think it's a "shelved Tyler Perry script". Awesome, NY Times disagrees.  Move on. It's landing with some people, but not you.

The thread was closed because of someone's inability to let someone else have a different opinion other than protecting their own and/or show. That someone was not me.

One show by a writer, even two, doesn't mean we won't attend or support a writer or their plays.  Topic, style or cast may get us to the theater with only positive energy.   The cast is for us at Table 17 (Rishawn and Young are particularly great) - and important black stories definitely are, regardless of how they turn out.  We were happy to be at MCC.  It's an opinion - go after someone else's...

And when you make an opinion people might have one of yours.
