What Tony awards do you think Taboo will be up for? I am still hoping that they get get nominated for Best Musical but that probably wont happen.
they shoud get noms for:
BEST ACTOR
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR (raul esparza)
BEST SCORE (in my opinion they should win this category but that prob
again wont happen)
BEST LIGHTING
BEST ORCHESTRATIONS

How often do shows which close early get nominated for much of anything, much less win?

I am almost postive that they said that Euan ws eligible for Best Actor.
And shows that close early sometimes get noms and sometimes even win them.
Parade closed and still won best book and best score and i think best direction( i may be wrong but if it didnt it should have)
+ Amour closed early last season and still was nominated for best musical. So keeping the fingers crossed

Posted: 1/29/04 at 1:08amHoldmebatboy~ I totally 100% agree. This was the first musical in long time that I felt real passion for. I am in totally mourning that it is closing. I want it to win EVERYTHING! Don't get me wrong, I loved Wicked...so Idina can win best actress and since Taboo's book was lacking, Wicked can win that! heheh I know it probably won't win..but I actually saw everything on broadway, (which is a first) so now I can judge. And that deserves to win!

It happens all the time. Shows like Cyrano (137 performances), Civil War (61 performances), Juan Darien (49 performances) and Chronicles of a Death Foretold (37 performances) were all nominated for Best Musical as well as other Tonys.
Even Anna Karenina (46 performances) received 4 nominations, so certainly Taboo will have a shot. It all depends on the competition and political climate. All the negative press on Taboo may hurt its chances for Tony nominations.

Posted: 1/29/04 at 4:47pmI think Taboo will be nominated for SOMETHING> My guess is lighting and costumes are already in the bag as far as nominations are concerned. Musical? Highly doubtful, not because it closed early (or closing early) but because Wicked and Avenue Q are already there (they should just announce their nominations) and most likely Bombay Dreams (even though noone knows anythign about it it is getting some hype) and Caroline or Change seem to be filling in those slots. Actor, Euan Morton and Boy George are eligable. One of them MIGHT be nominated, so keep you fingers crossed. It probably will also be nominated for score on account there isn't really any other show to fill in one of the last slots (Avenue Q and Wicked, again, are already a given)

#10TABOO Tony Question
Posted: 1/29/04 at 5:10pmYeah, MusicalComedyMan, it is a fallacy that an actor has to be above the title to a get Lead Actor nomination. (I believed it once myself.) Eligibility is determined by a Tony committee. Partly (or fully?) based on on-stage time, I believe. This is just ELIGIBILITY...doesn't mean they WILL be nominated, just indicates which category they ought to be nominated in, if they are. Otherwise the members of the nominating committee might be nominating people in different categories, think what a nightmare that would be!

In recent years I remember Side Show, Parade, The Dead, and
Swing were nominated after closing. It's not really that uncommon. Granted none of them won, but they do still get nominated.
(Mister Matt, didn't Civil War hang on till about the week after the Tonys? I thought they closed right after the Awards, as a lot of shows seem to do.....I could be wrong)

Posted: 1/30/04 at 1:56amHey Sunfish... it isnt a falicy at all... there is a guideline, they just don't always follow it. For instance neither huck or jim in Big River were eligible for best actor in the origional cast. I think the reason this happened this year is because not many people would be eligible. But it is a real guideline.

There weren't eligible because the leading acting categories were eliminated that year. Technically, yes, if you are billed above the title you are eligible as a leading actor/actress. But the producers can simply petition to have a certain actor be put in the leading or supporting category and it will usually happen. For example: Sutton Foster was billed about as far below the title as possible but she was obviously the lead so the producers petitioned for her to be put in that category and she was.

Posted: 1/30/04 at 2:23pmMusicalComedyMan, I wasn't clear. I meant that the "name above the title" was a fallacy in that it was not THE ONLY WAY a person would be eligible for lead actor/actress. Name above the title, definitely eligible; if not, there are other ways to be considered. We're both saying the same things, I just wanted to clarify my statement.

Posted: 1/30/04 at 2:39pmI know this is random, but I bet Taboo will get a nomination for lighting. I really like the lighting in the show, and the lighting director, Natasha Katz, is a Tony winner.

#20re: re: re: TABOO Tony Question
Posted: 1/30/04 at 2:59pmNothing against Taboo...I liked a lot of things about it, but I expect the four Best Musical nominees will be Avenue Q, Bombay Dreams, Caroline, or Change, and Wicked.

Posted: 1/30/04 at 4:25pmParade is one of the most emotionally stirring shows I've ever seen. The story and the music were just amazing. I only wish I'd had the opportunity to see it again. For me, there was not one dull moment in that show.

I wish I had the chance to see it. I'm inlove with the recording- especially Carolee Carmello.
The story is very touching and the music brings out all the emotional elements of the trial and murder of Mary Phagan.
Why didnt you like it Al Dente?
My favorite song would have to be "The Picture Show." I want to be Mary Phagan so bad!

Mister Matt - I agree completely. I soaked in every moment, and couldn't stop thinking about it for a long time after. I also wish I could have had the chance to see it more than once -- but I was *very* happy it received Tony recognition....(even though I thought Carolee should have won)
