Just saw The Ark the other night. IT WAS INCREDIBLE. Never have I ever read reviews that were so off!
Seriously, I'm starting to understand how Noah himself felt as I declare that The Ark is GOOD, DECENT, HILARIOUS, FAMILY FUN! It's a show about families FOR families. What's wrong with that, you idiot critics? Am I the only one who sees it?
In all utter honesty, I've never had so much fun at a show. (And I've seen some pretty good shows in my day.) If anyone is looking for a great family show for the holidays that is UPLIFTING, WHOLESOME, CLEAN AND LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY, check out THE ARK. It will not disappoint. Just check out some of the reader reviews on http://theater2.nytimes.com/2005/11/16/theater/reviews/16ark.html.
So as Egyptus says at the end of the first act, "Can I get an Amen?"
The reveiws weren't "off." They were expressing that particular viewers opinion. And I happen to aggree with them. I thought it seemed like it belonged in a Disney theme park and had pretty much no reason for telling the story besides to make corny dated jokes and sing bland music about bland things. But to each his own.

Shill Alert! Shill Alert!
I tend not to see musicals funded by the Mormon Church. Even if Annie Golden is in it!
I thought it was OKAY... not awesome, not bad... I love Annie Golden and Adrian Zmed, and I thought the efforts made to make the audience feel like animals were interesting...
I'd go if ya told me the Ark sinks in the end.

They should do a double feature of this and "Two By Two."

eno - did you and I see the same show? Awesome? No - mediocre and sexist.
I'm pretty sure the Mormon Church is not funding this production. The writers are both Mormon and a production of the piece (in a different version) 20 years ago was produced in a theater the church owns, but this particular production hs no link, especially a financial one, to the LDS Church.
Oh, and by the way, welcome to the boards, Mr. Shill.
This piece has been around in my city (Seattle) forever and a day. I'm sooooooooooooooo sick about hearing about it, Mormon funding or not.

I can personally vouch for the fact that the Mormon Church has no connection, financial or otherwise, to this production. It's an easy assumption to make, though, since McLean has an active music ministry in the church.
I don't know that I'd call anyone's hands "dirty," just tuneless, bland, and completely unnecessary.
Well if they are Mormon, then their hands are dirty. I hope there are no homosexuals in this production, they might have to be sent to SLC for some electro-shock therapy.

Call me old-fashioned, conservative, "dirty", whatever. But going to The Ark made me feel happy. No, the show didn't reinvent the musical wheel. It's not edgy, either. But I really had a great time. And I went with my family who all enjoyed it, too. Taking that into consideration, it's totally worthwhile.
I never expected to see such an intense (if misguided and intolerant in its own right) religious discussion on this board! But that's not the point of this thread. Regardless of its creator's religious beliefs, "The Ark" makes no mention of homosexuality or any other tenets of Mormonism, aside from (I suppose) the belief that the Flood occurred and God caused it.
For what it's worth, I've seen half a dozen productions of this show over the years (it's been done in several iterations in my area), and as a mellow, little family show it's not all that bad. But whoever thought it was something that would sell in New York should have his head checked.

It's a show about families for families. I wish there were more shows like that in New York.

Bobbybubby, while I respect your anger at religions that teach intolerance, I think it's unfair to paint all members of that religion with a broad, sweeping brushstroke. There are several posters on this board who are LDS (no, I'm not a Mormon myself) who are wonderful, loving, openminded people. They have many gay friends on and off this board and are very supportive of gay rights. If one of them wrote a play would it be fair to say they had "dirtied" it? That would be prejudicial itself!
Ourtime- I know the person who thought it was a great idea to bring the play to New York and we are having dinner together next week. And I agree with you. Should be an interesting dinner. By the way, she's not LDS, either.

Oh come on-the LDS church has NOTHING to do with this production-Puhleeez give me a freaking break! And BTW I am LDS and do not care for Michael McClean AT ALL so I will not waste my time or Broadway ticket money seeing this. But, I don't know, I thought Noah was a Bible character anyway so big deal.

Personally I found the draw of The Ark to be the clearly talented cast doing as best as they could with the material they were given.
I saw it in previews and don't know if changes have been made, but I rather liked the characters of Ham and Egyptus and also found that the actors in the other roles were trying to do as best they could with less than fabulous material.
Is it really closing Sunday, or is that just a rumor?
