Yes, there was a press release back in November about the Patti LaBelle/Jill Scott duet. I honestly don't know what happened with it. I would like to know as well. Did it get recorded?

I am a big fan of both LaBelle and Scott. It'll show up, I'm sure.

It probally wouldn't fit on the CD. The CD is 78 minutes long.

Maybe they will release it on a CD single?

the cd itself is fine, much enjoyment to be had from it. Its a good representation of what was onstage. Its just so much more emotional though obviously onstage. That last few songs though are so powerful and it partially comes through on disc, but watching it onstage is phenomenal

A few things:

OK, first off, I loved this show. I've seen it twice already and I plan to see it many more times.

This recording sucks. I think cast recording producers have started to go overboard with the amount of dialogue they put onto cast recordings. I mean, really, we're paying to hear the score. If you want people to buy tickets and see the show, let them do that. The dialogue just doesn't work well on this, or any recording if you ask me, but especially on this one. And I don't think it's smart marketing.

I listened through to the entire 6 and a half minutes of the Lion King track (African Homeland). I'll never put myself through that again. If I want to listen to spoken monotone dialogue over the background of music to The Lion King, I'll buy that CD.

And man, I really loved this show when I saw it live, but the end of Act I on the recording really should have been the end of "What About Love?". Adding the dictation of Nettie shouting, "Dear Celie, I know you think I'm dead, but I'm NOT! Blah Blah...oh, and Celie, don't forget, I AM NOT DEAD!" Jesus! It almost laughable. We get it, you're not dead. What a bad way to ruin the beautiful moment at the end of "What About Love?"

THE COLOR PURPLE cast recording is an example of how a great show can turn out a bad recording. This is the reason why shows that often win the Tony for Best Score do NOT win the Grammy for Best Cast Recording.

Every number sung by Elisabeth Withers-Mendes (Shug) is just lovely and worthy of repeated listening. The rest just isn't music and it's not enjoyable to listen to. There is too much quiet dialogue, then the next thing you know someone is singing dialogue really loud, followed by someone singing an actual song. This was my problem with CAROLINE, OR CHANGE and THE WOMAN IN WHITE. Instead of writing actual songs, they're writing sung dialogue, and that's not enjoyable listening. It's choppy and it seems like a lazy way to surpass the task of writing actual songs.

Thank you SOOO much for bringing up and I'M NOT DEAD. The first time me and Wickedgeek saw it, we had to look at each other at that part and just be like "What is this?". Of course when I bought the recording I had to specially note to him that it was indeed included for a good laugh.
African Homelands first half I love. Once the soldiers invade, I have to switch if off, it becomes like Lion King.
What do you think about the last 3 tracks and Our Prayer? I personally enjoy the recording, but overall the show does have a few faults in its music. Not score though, I love the score so much.

I totally disagree. I like when they include the dialogue to set up songs and help those of us who haven't and probably won't ever see the show fallow along with the story. it makes it much more of a theatrical experience. if you want a CD with just songs then get a britney spears CD. don't buy a cast recording for musical shows that will likely try and PRESERVE some of the book as well. the act one finale track is one of my favorites on this CD particularly because it was, for me, the most theatrical track and allowed me to envision very easily what must be happening on stage. I wish other cast recordings had included more dialogue especially the ones that end up filling only half the disc or end up having ten more minutes of space that they could have included more reprises or dialogue like the full monty and millie and some others... if I had a choice I'd prefer that all shows would be recorded like dessa rose with the entire show on two CDs.

I must admit I do enjoy including as much as possible on cast recordings just because its there. I may not always listen to the tracks, like on Assassins or Pacific Overtures off the top of my head, but I like knowing that as much of the production is preserved as possible on a disc for me to remember.
And I think the dialogue on the cd helps add buildup instead of awkwardly cutting right into songs. It certainly does add that dramatic effect to it that captures moments perfectly, almost like sitting through the show again

One more thing:

Those church ladies are annoying. Period. I keep thinking my CD is skipping, but that's just the way the music is written and the way they're singing. Ugh!
