Here's an amazing tribute to musicals!:

If that had happened at the Oscars, I would have been less uncomfortable having him exclaim "The musical is back!" afterward...

Everyone's making comparisons between this year's Oscars ceremony and the Tonys, leading to my question of "Have any of you ever actually SEEN the Tonys?"
I would kill for the Tonys to be as entertaining as the Oscars were last night.
The writing, presentation and set of the Oscars last night were all top notch, but that Musical Is Back! tribute didn't hold a candle to some of the worst TONY performances.
The 2004 TONYS opening is my favorite opening that they have ever had.

Yeah, previously it was good, I just mean the more recent years. Though actually I liked the opening in 2005 as well.
I thought it was kind of nice to remind everyone that such a thing as musicals exist :) nice effort, not the greatest performance but interesting. I did get quite a kick out of the Mamma Mia/drill team bit though
There was NO NEED to remind people that the movie musicals are around.
Movie musicals have been very popular and lucrative in the last couple of years. In my opinion, you've gotta be living in the middle-of-nowhere to not notice the return of movie musicals.
The opening was enough of a tribute to theatre and music. The whole montage was terrible and poorly put together.
Some of you believe this hot mess was better than nothing. I beg to differ. This is hurting them, not helping.
Bottom line, everyone has a different opinion about this and they are entitled to it, it's really not that serious.
Is it just me or do others here think that Hugh Jackman is overated?

It might be a little late to way in, but I'm going to do it anyway.
That was an ABORTION.

I liked the idea but it ended up being a complete disaster. Most of the "musical" they selected are terrible representations of musical theatre. (HSM? Mamma Mia? Moulin Rouge? Seriously?) The camera work was really odd. I didn't even notice when Zac, Vanessa, Dominic, and Amanda came in- they just popped out of nowhere. I think Beyonce got more camera time than Hugh.
It's absurd to me that so many people are saying "what did you expect??"
Ya know what? I expected QUALITY!
I think that is the biggest problem today, the complete and utter lack of people expecting quality. People were disappointing last year when Britney Spears had a bad performance at the VMAs and are now over the moon because she can LIP SYNC PROPERLY TO HER OWN SONGS. It's so sad.
I saw Kathy Griffin the other night and she was talking about seeing the Cher and Bette Midler shows in Vegas and she said "My ears did a double take because I heard something I haven't heard in ages coming from that stage: LIVE SINGING." This doesn't merely stretch to just people being OK with lip-syncing, but has to do more with the lowered expectations we have for the "talent" of today.
Just because the Academy compiled this montage does not mean that we need to expect lower quality. If people on a BROADWAY forum even thought it was ****, then what of the general public? Why should they have any more faith in the musical genre now?
