I didn't care that the High School Musical kids performed, I just thought the number sucked.
If they were going to go through with it, make it good.
That was just terrible.
David Rockwell's Sets are Incredible!

I really loved the three seconds of Evita... but in reality, I didn't at all.

Beyonce fails at lip-syncing.
It sucked.

Oh God! This I gotta see!

I didn't care that Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens were in it, the segment as a whole was just a mess. And Beyonce WAS lip-syncing!
I totally agree that David Rockwell deserves some major props for tonight's sets!

the lip syncing or singing or whatever... it was HORRIBLE! as well as the arrangements... oh man they made Hairspray sound ugly
The segment was a mess and it was stupid, but I appreciate the effort I guess. It's always nice to see musicals represented.
I also thought it was cool that in the preview of movies to come for the year 2009 they included snippets from Fame!
During the performance I was simultaneously enjoying it while going WTF, though I did like all the references to Broadway in this year's telecast.

The sets were by far the hilight of the night for me. Absolutely bstunning!! Mr. Rockwell did an unbelieveable job!
And for the record- Queen Latifah has a gorgeous voice!
I'm not even going to comment on the sloppy weakness of a segment known as The Musical Is Back. Crap I just did.
I loved Hugh...was willing to deal with Beyonce..at first..but then it lost me when the "kids" came out. Noble attempt, but still a failure.
I would rather not have musicals represented at all, then this sort of thing. The opening was cute, because Hugh can charm an audience through just about anything. They should have just left it with that.

Am I the only person that doesn't care for Hugh Jackman's singing voice?
Sure, the "Musical (Hollywood that is, not Broadway) is Back" number was a MESS.
But what about the "Best Song" category?
Making those three sing together was about the worst idea ever. I was totally embarrassed. For ALL involved -- including myself.
The performance literally killed musical theatre dead. We were screaming at the tv at my place. SO BAD.

I hope it wasn't the reason that "Jai Ho" didn't get a longer performance.

i actually enjoyed the best song performances... i like how john legend came out at the end and sang along... i just thought i was well done and didn't really favor on song over the other... i liked it...
willep... i like hugh jackman's singing voice but i can definitely understand people who don't like it... it's not the best voice in the world but the guy can sing and he sings well... and he also has great stage presence and that IT factor...

I would have preferred they have the best original song performances go longer than bother with this musical is back number.
Shout out to Broadway Hopefull, but Killed.
I Liked the DREAMS Score.

You rock!
I wanted to like The Musical is Back medley. But it just wasn't good. No one sounded good, the musical direction was terrible, the choreography wasn't impressive, the song choices were strange.
It wasn't even a shout out to Broadway at all. I don't know why people are saying that.
I wish they had struck this and given the three original songs full performances. At least then we wouldn't have had John Legend mucking up Down to Earth.
I've lost faith in Baz after his "Musical is Back" number. Horrendous. And the never-ending need to crowbar Beyonce into every goddamn public event, whether she's qualified or necessary to be a part of it, mystifies me. But kudos including three of our faves, Spencer Liff, Tommy Berklund and Kevin Stea, into the number.
Count me in for the minority who loved it. As a piece of musical theater - true, rather dreadful. But come on guys - who expected anything musical from an Oscars telecast? I mean this is usually made (well primarily to pat the industry on the back, but also) for mainstream America. So even with Jackman hosting I never expected anything like this or if I did I just thought we'd get a song and dance number like Billy Crystal used to do (if memory serves correctly). But to get a crazy mismatch of musicals from yesterday and today, no matter how poorly executed - I just adored it. Yes, even the two or three seconds of HSM. And I absolutely ADORE the fact that Amanda Seyfried, my little Lily Kane, my Mormon Sarah, my Karen - performed at the Academy Awards. I was beaming, even if it only lasted a little while.
