Posted: 6/3/10 at 10:45amMaybe they'll have all of the pre-recorded tracks, and they'll just lip sync to them. At least some of the songs. That's be even funnier to see them badly lip sync!

Posted: 6/3/10 at 11:21amrachelbway1011, simply put, they can't. It will be terrible. And the footage will make it on youtube because Christine thinks that she's the bee's knees. If my high school drama department was actually a functioning drama department instead of a crappy French teacher doing nothing, and this stupid flute player who thinks she's amazing found out, we would be doing this. But thankfully, I don't think anyone knows about this except me.

Posted: 6/3/10 at 12:01pmI wouldn't say NO high schools could do it. My former HS could definitely do it (a performing arts school with an opera department that had multiple coloraturas), and I have a friend who was involved in one of the first HS productions (I think in Ohio) and says it came out really well.

Posted: 6/3/10 at 12:06pmThe average high school can't pull this off. Maybe a school with three or four major powerhouse students, and a genuinely good ensemble, but not Middle-America High School, home of the Dancin' Wildcats.

There are certainly schools capable of doing it. The problem is that 95% aren't, and a whole lot of schools from that majority will be first in line to try it anyway. This is gonna be messy.
That having been said, I remember the reaction to Les Miz School Edition being about the same ("you'll never have a kid good enough to play Valjean"), and I have seen several very good productions, so you never know.

Posted: 6/3/10 at 1:53pmHow bizarre. I'm wondering if this also includes youth theatres or is it strictly highs schools and colleges? Some of the clips in the video from the college productions don't look that bad.

Finally, Phantom is scary again.

Posted: 6/3/10 at 2:25pmYou would think that maybe a high school in New York could perform this, I know that living in Florida there are a couple of high school that I know would be able to pull it off, and I'm hoping that high school directors know there performers limits.

Posted: 6/3/10 at 2:41pmI agree, it isn't that big a deal. Some will be able to pull it off and some won't, but that goes for any show. My high school had a reputation for doing excellent musicals, but I went back this year and saw their production of "Thoroughly Modern Millie," and it was subpar compared to what I know they were capable of doing.

Even if the girl can pop out an E6, that doesn't mean it's a good idea for her to play Christine. The PotO cadenza requires a LOT of stamina, which your average teenaged girl is not going to possess.
I'm more concerned about the girl playing Carlotta than the one playing Christine, though.

Posted: 6/3/10 at 7:38pmThe cadenza is pre-recorded and should probably remain so. Or at least the final note anyway. No one should force an armature to do it live when the professionals don't even bother.

Posted: 6/3/10 at 7:40pmWho's your dream high school cast for the show? I'd love to see Artie Goldblatt from B'nai Israel Day School and Katie Marie Johnson from Westview High take on these roles!

Posted: 6/3/10 at 8:12pmAfter suffering through dreadful high school productions of BIRDIE and SWEET CHARITY recently, I shudder to think of what PHANTOM would be like on the high school stages.

Posted: 6/3/10 at 11:24pmI imagine they're going to transpose the cadenzas down. Of course, high schools being high schools, especially when the "drama teacher" is just someone who wants the stipend, are going to go the illegal route and put it back up where it should be, and to hell if it ruins the girl's voice.
