...Boeing-Boeing had been a new play. Thus entering it into the best play slot for the Tonys. Would it have been nominated, if so what would have been the 4 plays been?
My thought;
August:Osage County
The 39 Steps
Boeing Boeing
Rock 'n' Roll

Posted: 1/6/09 at 1:23amI agree with your choices as to what would have been nominated. But, I still think that if Boeing Boeing were a new play it would have lost out to August.

THE SEAFARER would not have been bumped out for BOEING BOEING.
I could see THE 39 STEPS having been bumped out for another comedy, though.

Of course not. THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED -- a comedy, that was closed already -- was nominated over CORAM BOY -- a drama, that was still open -- a couple seasons ago.

That we should make our threads titles a little clearer.

If BOEING-BOEING had opened as a new play, I think a lot more people would have questioned why one of today's playwrights would even write a play like BOEING-BOEING.
It might have bumped out 39 STEPS, but it would all depend on how many people didn't care.

Posted: 1/6/09 at 4:24pmIf you really think about it, BOEING is not a perticularly well-written play. I don't think it would have been nominated had it been new. The reason it did so well is because it ignored the poorly written script and embraced the humor. It won Best Revival because it appeared on the scene and no one expected the comic gem that appeared on the Longacre stage. Despite the fact that the script is poor, the cast and director made it work and everyone seemed to overlook its past.
