They have posted 2 min clips for actors and actresses roundtables. Hoping the interview its entirety would show up soon. I still hate how few actors they're able to get (5 out of 20 in each overall category?). Makes me wonder how hard the producers even try.

In fairness to the Hollywood Reporter and Scott Feinberg, who moderates the Tony ones, a roundtable gets kind of unwieldy if you have more than 6 or 7 people each trying to get a word in. So I imagine that Feinberg picks and chooses a select few to represent the various shows (and probably better-known names). Plus, you want an element of racial diversity, so it's not all-white, too. On top of that, there's also the availability of the performers involved, so it's a tricky thing to balance it all. ...Of course, they could've split it into 4 roundtables: Actors in a Musical; Actresses in a Musical; Actors in a Play; Actresses in a Play. But imagine the logistics of booking that.

ANDY KARL's canned recap of the torn ACL ("I have trouble talking about it..." ) is starting to sound phony because he says the same exact lines every time... Ugh... Love him but wish he'd be a bit more authentic...

Andy's recap might sound ''canned'' to you, but that doesn't necessarily make it any less genuine. If you ''love him,'' perhaps you might understand and sympathize with how emotional and stressful that night was, and that he might still be processing what happened that evening. It's not like Andy's had tons of time to reflect and come up with new lines to impress you per se.
He's been on a whirlwind of promotion (i.e., NPR's ''Ask Me Again''; the SAG-AFTRA ''Career Conversation''; Hollywood Reporter roundtable; Leonard Lopate's radio show; the Drama League Luncheon; ''Groundhog'' CD signing), plus 8 shows a week.

I have to say that after watching the actors roundtable, Andy Karl comes off a bit full of himself and uninterested. All of the other men responded to each other and seemed to be enjoying themselves. He seemed very aloof.

I always hate when people make judgements of people from these roundtables.
It's an unnatural environment that many of these people aren't used to. Whilst they do interviews, sharing an interview with 4 other people who you may know well or have only just met is different. Not to mention everyone is probably tired from doing 8 shows a week and doing all the extra awards season promo. People have different personalities, some people are introverted and awkward and find it difficult to know how to react around new people. There was nothing in the video to suggest to me that Karl was either full of himself or uninterested. He listened quietly whilst others were speaking and gave detailed answers when he himself was asked.
Not everyone is a naturally charming, confident person that knows the right time to laugh at someone's joke or chime in with a quippy remark. Social interactions can range from stupidly easy to stupidly difficult, depending on the individual.

My comment wasn't mean to offend, I was just sharing my own reaction to it. Perhaps it's just because I've heard so much about his injury and then listed to him "toot his own horn" and casually mention the Olivier win and Tony nom. I've heard positive things about him in general, but here he wasn't someone to whom I feel a connection, warmth, or affability. Just my opinion.

You didn't offend me, but I do think judging people on so little is off, although I obviously can't stop you.
Much of these roundtables is based around the experiences of these actors in these roles. Obviously the injury was a huge thing that happened for Karl and he was also directly asked about it. I would find it odd if he refused to talk about it. As for mentioning the Olivier, I actually took that in the opposite way. It was a question about entrance applause, Karl wanted to share a funny story about the erection lyric, but probably would have known people would be confused by him getting entrance applause at an average performance as he's not exactly known to the wider audience. So he clarified that it was for a short amount of time that he was receiving it directly after his Olivier win. As for mentioning the Tony nom, the whole purpose of them being there is because they're Tony nominees. It's not like he would be claiming superiority over any of the other 4 by saying that.

Froote, thanks for all your thoughtful comments. I couldn't agree with you more. Besides the press events I mentioned earlier, Andy Karl also did the media day for the Tonys, as well as his opening night. Can any of us imagine how many times he's been asked about his leg injury? ... As a theater journalist, I've been following his career since his early days in ''Altar Boyz'' and even interviewed him one-on-one a couple of times along the way. I've never found Karl to be anything but charming, bright and often self-deprecating.
And I'd use those same adjectives for the gracious participiants on both of the Hollywood Reporter's latest Tony roundtables.

I really wish they'd do this with the playwrights/librettists. It'd be really interesting to see Paula Vogel, Steven Levenson, Lucas Hnath, etc. sitting around a table shooting the breeze.

Alex Kulak2, here's the next best thing: American Theatre magazine did a wonderful roundtable with 5 playwrights who made their Broadway debut this season: Joshua Harmon (''Significant Other'' ), Lucas Hnath (''A Doll's House, Part 2'' ), Lynn Nottage (''Sweat'' ), J.T. Rogers (''Oslo'' ) and Paula Vogel (''Indecent'' ). Enjoy!
