Some excerpts --
"Jackman, the Tony-nominated star of "The Boy From Oz," is hosting the Tonys again this year.
As part of his deal, he insisted he be allowed to open the telecast with a Peter Allen song from "The Boy From Oz," the $8.5 million musical about the flamboyant singer-songwriter who died of AIDS in 1992.
That was a smart way of making sure "The Boy From Oz" would have a presence on the telecast, especially since, at the time the deal was struck, nobody thought the show would be nominated for Best Musical.
But on Monday, "The Boy From Oz" was nominated, which means its cast is entitled to perform a number from the show.
So now there will be two Peter Allen production numbers on the telecast - a situation that might seem unfair to the other nominated musicals, which only get one chance to strut their stuff.
On Monday, some of the producers of those other shows were worried the Tony telecast would turn into a salute to "The Boy From Oz" (truly, a terrifying thought).
But yesterday, Tony officials assured them that would not happen.
Jackman will open the telecast with a Peter Allen song, probably "Everything Old Is New Again," which he will perform with the Radio City Rockettes.
But he will not - and this is the key point - do the number in the "style" of Peter Allen.
He'll do it "straight," if you will, wearing a tuxedo rather than a Hawaiian shirt.
Only during the "official" number from "The Boy From Oz" will he be allowed to camp it up as Peter Allen.
Then, wiggling around singing "I Go to Rio," he can have as gay an old time as he wants."

I wanted Hugh to do EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN - and with the real Rockettes in cameo roles -- it looks like I may be getting my wish ![]()
But I also wanted the production to show I GO TO RIO ( if they can lug the piano staircase to Radio City Music Hall
) because it is a rousing and joyous number that will attract the national audiences - and it looks like it may also happen ![]()
Woo-hoo !!

I figured they'd do "When I Get My Name in Lights" to give the kid a chance to shine. That's what they did at the Macy's Parade and it was so good!
I have this strange feeling we'll be seeing a lot of commercials for Van Helsing during the Tonys this year.

By the weekend of the Tonys, "Van Helsing" will most likely be out of the top ten at the box office. I can't see the studio spending on commercials in prime time.

This just further depresses me
Since Hugh was getting his OZ spotlight anyway, they should have given TABOO that Best Musical Slot
DAMN THESE CHOICES
Again...I'm not bitter
ruffian, i love some of your posts..but you NEED to get over writing EVERY thread about Taboo and how it was overlooked!! relax child - all is well!! :)

They picked BFO because it's been running successfully since autumn.
And I doubt we'll be seeing Van Helsing commercials- or at least a lot of them. Tony viewers tend to be older and pretty well-heeled, not really the target audience for a summer popcorn flick.
Hey, so I am a huge Judy/Liza/Lorna fan and that draws my interest into The Boy from Oz, as Peter Allen had such an influence on their lives. How is the music? Is it worth buying the soundtrack?
A lot of people who went to see BFO were just because of Hugh Jackman so it wouldn't surprise me if more of those people (older and younger) tuned in just to see him sing or host. Showing the commercial probably wouldn't add to anything because most of those people would have seen it already if they're followers of him.
yes, buy the CD. its great.

In a venue like the RCMH with its huge stage and auditorium-size theatre, you will need a fairly big production number for a show to shine in the TONYs - if you are talking of being inside the music hall. TBFO has two excellent production numbers that would be very suitable. The connection between RCMH and Peter Allen is too tempting not to capitalize on - and that is captured in EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN. Having the Rockettes in cameo roles should bring the house down... For a sheer spectacle number which features the entire cast ( while still managing to highlight the performance of the lead star), I GO TO RIO is an excellent choice to get the audience moving with the beat.
Would these numbers also work on television, which would be what most people ( the several millions out there) have access to? Yesss! In addition to the above reasons, you also get to see a close-up of what the fuzz about Hugh is all about.

I just hope it doesn't become too much about "The Boy From Oz". If they do end up singing "Everything Old is New Again", I'll be thrilled; it's a great production number, and the Rockettes will please the crowds. I can't wait for the Tonys this year!

The big question is whether the NYC's Radio City Rockettes will be wearing the Boston Red Sox jerseys they wore recently in Boston.
