Posted: 3/22/04 at 8:57pmI think the Tony is Hugh's, and I want him to win. I hope John Tartaglia gets a nomination... and I think Alfred Molina will also be nominated. Probably someone from Assassins, too.

Posted: 3/22/04 at 9:00pmI haven't seen Hugh either... John is actually the only one mentioned so far that I have seen. But I really think the Tony is Hugh's. I mean, have you seen the reviews of his performance? Nothing but outstanding.

Posted: 3/22/04 at 9:11pmThe Tony practically has Jackman's name on it. Not only did Molina get mostly negative reviews, but Jackman's performance has been called one of the best and most accomplished in Broadway history.

Nominees:
Hugh Jackman
John Tartaglia
Someone from Assasins
Joel Grey may get it, even though he has such a small part, he IS Joel Grey.
Who knows?
So while I can't put together the nominees, I can with pretty good assurance tell you whom the Tony is going to. Hugh Jackman.

The expectations from critics and fans alike favour Hugh Jackman - for such an outstanding performance in a triple threat role.

I want to see Boy from Oz now..
Do you think that his Hollywood celebrity will have anything to do with a victory?
I think it would be great press, because a Hugh victory will bring in more exposure than normal. I can see it on Access Hollywood now.

Posted: 3/23/04 at 10:27amI doubt the fact that Hugh is as you say a "Hollywood Celebrity" has anything to do with it. He got his start in musical theatre, and with Boy From Oz, the early training has paid off in spades. The man is, pure and simple, a rare triple threat, and, in addition, has done quite a bit for the theatre community with his enthusiastic fund raising for BC/EFA. I think it is these attributes that will win him the Tony.

My little list...and I don't usually participate in things like this...this is my hopeful list...here goes:
*Hugh Jackman-He carries the show, and has had the best press of anyone on this list.
Alfred Molina-you can't have an actor play this role on Broadway and NOT give him a nomination.
Johnny T-He's just fantastic and I love him.
Hunter Foster-I can't believe no one's mentioned him yet.
Michael McCelroy-His performance in Big River is still being talked about, despite it closing several months ago.
those are my predictions.
Oh and Norm Lewis for Children of Eden...
They need a category for best concert.

John Tartaglia and Hugh Jackman will definitely be nominated. Alfred Molina, despite mixed reviews, will be nominated as well, if only because he's playing Tevye. As for the other nominations...it's a dogfight between Euan Morton and possibly the men of Big River and Assassins. I think Hunter Foster's chances for a nomination are iffy at best. In the end, though, the nominations almost don't matter. This is one of the easiest-to-predict categories this year.
After the Fiddler reviews came out, it became clear that the Tony is Jackman's. In my opinion, even a great performance by Molina couldn't have knocked Jackman off his frontrunner's perch. He's putting in a truly spectacular performance, carrying the show, raising record amounts for BC/EFA, and hosting various functions for the American Theatre Wing. He's done everything right, everyone likes him, and the fact that he's a Hollywood star who agreed to stay on Broadway for a full year is just icing on the cake.

kec... don't you start giving me " " air quotes...
Is he not a """""""hollywood celebrity""""""" even though his best performances have arguably been on stage? pretentiousness rules apparently.

I wasn't being pretentious. My apologies if you took offense at my phrasing. But Hugh, to me, isn't really a Hollywood Celebrity in the true sense of the word. Wolverine notwithstanding, he has yet to score really big in a film where he is the star -- the closest he came was with Kate and Leopold, when he was nominated for the Golden Globe. Presumably Van Helsing will make him the star everyone knows he is and should be.
You asked if the fact that Hugh is a Hollywood Celebrity will factor in his winning the Tony. My answer is no.
