Guys this SERIOUSLY needs to happen....if Tracy Miller is not Penny Pingleton in the upcoming Hairspray movie, then i will not enjoy it HALF as much. Seriously i've seen multiple people try to play this role, and NOBODY EVEN COMES CLOSE. She is by far the most hilarious and talented penny pingleton and i know if they cast her, audiences would LOVE HER and probably come back more than once because of how much she enhances the entire show. Everyone cross your fingers that Tracy Miller will be cast as Penny!!!!!!!!
I totally agree with you, and hope that they cast her, but so far, it's looking like they want "names". Then again, maybe with the casting of Travolta, Crystal and Queen Latifah they may feel that's enough. Obviously they're searching for a Tracy, so I hold out hope.
By the way, I feel the same way about Chester Gregory for Seaweed.

She will not be in the movie. Supposedly they cast Kata Mara in the role of Penny. If you saw Brokeback Mountain, she played Alma Jr. at age nineteen.

i love kate mara, but i thought they were casting all the kids as unknowns?

Where did you hear this about Kate Mara? I have no idea how she is as a singer, but I love her as an actor
although it would have been nice to see some of our Broadway and National Tour favorites in these roles, we must remember that this film is NOT a venture of the Hairspray Franchise family. They don't care who has played the roles before.

New Line owns both the Broadway and Movie rights.
Another candidate for Penny is Diana Degarmo who is doing a great job as Penny now on Broadway. She auditioned so she could be right in there. I'm sure there are lots of candidates. Probably hear in April or May.
If anyone is interested in seeing Tracy Miller play Penny in the film and want to help get her name out there, you should post on the IMDB discussion board for the Hairspray movie or write a letter to the producers at the following address:

I don't think anyone is out as of now...from what I heard they aren't casting Penny or Tracy for another 2 weeks.

Diana would be an excellent casting choice--she's probably been the most famous Penny (correct me if I'm wrong) seeing how people who watched American Idol are more likely to go see the movie (since they're into music) and Diana will be in it. She's got a name (maybe not the biggest, but definitely has one) and she is great in the role.
i just don't want this movie to turn into a "name that star" kinda thing. esp with meryl streep rumors floating around for velma. I mean... star studded, okay, fine. but when it looks like the producers literally threw up "knowns" all over their casting choices... for me personally, its a turn off and it sends the message that they need names to carry this show and bring in some $$ as opposed to trusting the material and doing the best they can with that.
on that note... PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CAST TRACY MILLER!!

Chicago was star-studded--and that movie did very well in both the box office and it was a good movie, right?
I just hope it's not a flop so movie musicals will continue to be made.
i love kate mara, but i thought they were casting all the kids as unknowns?
It never ceases to amaze me who some people consider to be "Knowns".
After failures of Rent and The Producers, I highly doubt any of the future movie musicals will feature original/replacement casts.

I'm from the UK and i sent my stuff for tracy in the movie. What do you think the chances are of them seeing a BRIT for the role?
well, crazy rumors of Kelly ozborne were floating around for a while, and i'll bet she's not half as talented as you. (I don't even have to know you to figure that one out.) And lots of Brits play americans on TV. Your chances are probably pretty even. (Cuz I'm like an expert on that sort of thing!-NOT)
Edit: "Jackson"- It's too bad that your "eyes" don't equate to box office dollars. Money is THE way to measure a movie's success.

i actually like them to cast names in movies, its always fun to see Hollywood stars you've always watched on screen (like catherine and renee in chicago) singing in a musical, in my opinion
either way it turns out (with more names or no names), im very excited for this movie! its gonna be great no matter what!
I agree it's fun to see names, but with John Travolta and Queen Latifah already attached, plus Billy Crystal (even though it isn't official yet), I think they will have more than enough stars in the film that they can cast unknowns for Tracy and Penny at least. On that note I will again say TRACY MILLER FOR PENNY!!!

I completely agree with you ashers2u, yankeegrl and HBG....I have seen Hairspray many times, and although I enjoyed it, i would not have gone back again if Tracy Miller was not a part of it. I hope the Producers of the new Hairspray movie read these boards and realize how amazing and talented she is, and what a phenomenal addition to the film cast she would be. She is by far the best choice for Penny Pingleton.

I'm definitely on board for the "Tracy Miller for Penny!" campaign. She's amazingly talented, and an incredibly sweet and genuine person as well.
I have to add though, there should also be a "Chester Gregory for Seaweed!" Campaign. He's just... brilliant. And he and Tracy had wonderful chemistry. I would love to see them back together as a duo again.
I agree about Chester, but since he's contracted in Tarzan for at least a year I don't think he'd be able to do it. Tracy, however, could do it!

No offense to Diana Degarmo....but PLEASE God do not cast her in the Hairspray movie. She has a great voice- put her on the radio or something, but Tracy Miller is BY FAR the best Penny Pingleton. My vote is for Tracy all the way!!! I am definitely writing a letter to that address, and I hope a lot of you guys will too.
She is cute and very Penny like, but how old is she? because I think they are casting only 16-21year olds as the teens in the show.

I agree with this, although she was amazing on stage, the cameras tell more truth, and she is in her early 30's, so if they are really casting late teens and early 20's, not gonna happen.
